TP-Link Deco M9 Plus 3pack - Better than expected
Had been mulling over a mesh wifi system to replace my Apple router with one extender that provided less than stable internet speeds throughout my home. With a cable input of 200mbps, I had places inside my house as low as 17mbps even as I would see 230mbps wireless speeds closest to my router. After weeks of reading specs and reviews on all the major brands of mesh wifi systems, I decided to give this TP-Link Deco system a try. The setup for the TP-Link Deco M9 was fairly easy, requiring an app download onto my iPhone, and about 30 minutes of placing and connecting the devices, first to my modem and then to the Deco hub router wifi signal. At first, I noticed some issues, with the signal being dropped on the satellite M9s after the connection to the M9 hub router. After downloading two firmware updates that problem disappeared. I then went about testing the internet speeds in all areas of my home, indoors and out., running from room to room where I always got a signal, but speeds varied dramatically, ranging from 230mbps down to, as low as, 30mbps in the more remote areas and in my outdoor living areas furthest from the M9 hub router. After sleeping on this dilemma it occurred to me that in moving about I needed to be sure what M9 Device I was connected to; and I began to notice a slight delay in my iPhone connection shifting to the closest M9 device. Ultimately, this gave me the answer. Upon retesting, as I moved from room to room, I made sure that my iPhone wireless connection had migrated to the closest M9 before performing the internet speed tests. Once I did this, speeds in every part of my home exceeded 100mbps, with most indoor areas achieving 150mbps to 230mps. Even on my back porch and screened porch, internet speeds were upward of 150mbps. Only one area had any issues, and that was a test done outdoors on a far corner of my home wish was one floor down and 40 feet away on the other side of a stone wall to the closest M9. In selecting this system I also noted that certain devices requiring different band speeds, and that could cause issues when running multiple devices that had specific band speed requirements. While I have not tested this yet, I can see that the DECO M9 app allows you to select the band speed by device...something worthy of consideration. Overall, I give this product two thumbs up, at a very reasonable price point. Thus far very happy with this purchase.

Best Wifi System I've owned to date
I had my house hardwired with Control 4 when I built back in '07. Of course everything is so outdated now and wifi sucks downstairs (control 4 set up is upstairs). I had a few companies give quotes regarding vamping up my wifi and cheapest quote was 12k! Needless to say I passed on the offer and kept looking for something that would work efficiently in my home. After reading reviews and doing a lot of research, I opted to give this TP Link Deco M9 Plus a shot. Instead of purchasing just the 3 pack, I purchased TWO three packs - I have screaming Fast Wifi (I have 1 Gig fiberoptic through cable company) throughout every inch of my home now - all for $600.00! I am so pleased with this purchase. Set up was also pretty easy - I did have to update each disk which took about 15 min each during set up - but that was it - all 6 connected to each other and I couldn't be happier!

Not as advertised. Great idea, poor execution.
In the last year my wife and I built our forever home, which is a bit larger than average at 4200 sq, but certainly not huge. I noticed that my 7 year-old ASUS RT-AC68U was having some coverage issues. I decided to replace the single router device with a mesh system to provide seamless coverage throughout the house and hopefully a little bit into the yard area. I did a great deal of research and decided that the TP-Link Deco M9+ system would be the way to go. It not only offers tri band wifi but Zigbee IoT hub features in one system. I don’t do much smart home stuff yet but thought it would be fun to play with. The TP-Link gets really good reviews on Amazon, online, and is also a fan favorite on YouTube. After much deliberation I decided to order the three-pack system which is advertised as able to cover homes up to 6,500 sq. The kit arrived quickly, and setup was a breeze, until it wasn’t. I set up the first of three identical units to be the “router” device and it quickly connected to my modem and the internet. From there I was able to establish the new network SSID and we were off to the races. I then moved to the second Deco device, just down the stairs from the fist, about 40’ and one floor away. The second device connected very quickly, and signal strength was great; I was excited. Two minutes later I lost network connection. I noticed that the second device had a solid red light on top vs. the expected green. According to the manual this means “Deco has issue”; yea that’s helpful. I restarted device several times but each time it booted up it went directly back to solid red. I set that unit aside and pulled the third Deco from the box and attempted to set it up. Unfortunately, this Deco unit was not able to find the first one at all. Using logic, I thought maybe the fist one had some sort of issue preventing subsequent devices from connecting. I power cycled the first Deco (router) and waited for it to come back online. When it finished its boot sequence it also went to solid red. Now what? After an hour poking around on the TP-Link forums with no luck (no search feature ☹), I decided to try fully resetting the devices with the reset button on the bottom. Each reset attempt resulted in a failure during the boot sequence. After the third or fourth attempt on each, they magically made it through the boot sequence, no idea why. I was, after hours of dorking with them, able to get all three online and communicating. I placed them throughout the house and achieved decent coverage while testing with a wifi signal meter app. My one complaint with wifi coverage is that it will be great, and then it will be gone. The drop off seems to be at about 50’, line of sight, from the nearest unit. Once network loss was achieved I had to manually reconnect my device as auto reconnect did not work on my phone. I also noticed a very clunky switch between 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz networks which also often forced me to reconnect my device manually. Device in this case is a Samsung Note 10. I also have a 1Gb unmanaged switch in the basement that services all my wired connections throughout the house. I noticed that the wired connections are very unreliable. Assuming its the passthrough on the “router” Deco device. I eventually had to remove my smart TV from wired connection because it couldn’t stream reliably. This method, switch and cabling, worked flawlessly with my other router. It has now been four days of using this system and I’ve decided to call the experiment a failure. My wireless and wired connections are unreliable at best. I get very sporadic network coverage and internet speeds. I am trained as an Electrical Engineer and have worked in IT professionally for over 20 years so feel confident in my ability, especially with something this simple. I have tried to tweak this system, reposition, reset, and so on but I’m afraid this is just not what it’s advertised as. I’ll be returning this set trying another option.
