  • Alto 5 doesn't have ARC, mute button won't work
Style: Alto 5 2.0 channel
I bought this as a combo to go with a 50" TCL TV. Having owned a 55" for a couple of years now, I know the built in TV speakers are pretty bad, so I wanted to improve upon that. This soundbar does sound good out of the box. I would prefer the ability to do some tweaks (treble/bass/etc) but none of that is available. It's good enough for a bedroom, but nothing like the quality you'd want in a home theater. My biggest gripe is that the Alto 5 doesn't have an HDMI ARC input. Using that with the TCL TV is completely seamless on my other TV. I probably wouldn't have purchased this if I'd known it didn't have ARC (the reviews for the 7 mention ARC, so I assumed they all had it). I have to use optical, and while it works, and the vol up and down buttons on the roku remote control the device, the mute button is now completely disabled. Also, there is no on screen volume level indicator, either. For something from the same brand as the TV, it sure doesn't integrate well. Needs HDMI ARC input! ... show more

  • Great sound for a great price!
Style: Alto 7+ 2.1 channel w/ wireless sub
The TCL Alto 7+ sounds really good using Bluetooth. The sound shakes my house. On the other hand, there is almost no sound coming out of it until I reach volume level 70 or above like other users have said. Turning it up to volume 100 is still not loud. I went through troubleshooting with TCL support and everything is hooked up correctly. I tried using both THE HDMI ARC and optical cable on my 75" TCL's, and it made no difference. I also have a 55" TCL TV and I hooked it up, and it sounded the way I would expect a sound bar to sound. The bigger TV is brand new, so I would expect the soundbar to integrate better with it. *** Update *** After reading other reviews, I was able to get the contact information for TCL Support. Apparently, the issue was not with the soundbar, but with my TV. TCL Support was able to resolve the issue. I'm changing my review for the soundbar overall to 5 stars, because it sounds fantastic on my 55" TCL TV. ... show more

  • Does Not Work with Roku TV Voice Remote, Just IR
Style: Alto 5+ 2.1 channel w/ wireless sub
This would be perfect, but the product description is inaccurate, so I got burned. The device claims to be controllable by the Roku TV remote that comes with Roku TV’s sold by TCL. However, there is a large caveat that is not disclosed in the description. It will only work with the infrared remote that comes with the Roku TV. If your TCL Roku TV comes with a voice remote, it will NOT control the soundbar. I confirmed this with TCL customer support after calling them to see why my remote would not work. Note that TCL’s website and user guide do not disclose this issue. You will only find out if you call their customer support for help. ... show more

  • Does everything I needed it to
Style: Alto 7+ 2.1 channel w/ wireless sub
Jumped on this right at launch to see how it could work in replacement of an Onkyo 5.1 system I'm not effectively using. Warning!! I am not an audiophile, just the common man. Key positives right out of the box: ARC capable Easy setup - sub auto connects to the speaker IR pass through Good design Fits pleasantly with my 55" TCL - about 1/2" shy in width of being able to slide back the ideal amount due to the feet from the TV Experience a few days in: Sounds are crisp and effective for the living room I have it in If you plan on switching between inputs, it can be a hassle (I just ARC everything) Being a smaller sub, the deeps received are definitely lessened, but still acceptable Haven't messed with bluetooth as I have an Echo for music I was debating getting a SONOS BEAM for a while, but for under half the price, this achieves everything I was needing - ARC, smaller footprint, still enough deeps with a wireless sub, low enough cost to where I could find other points in my home to use it if it didn't make sense for my living room. ... show more

  • I'm not sure why there is so much criticism of this sound bar, it's great
Style: Alto 7+ 2.1 channel w/ wireless sub
I got rid of cable almost ten years ago and have been a strictly stream kind of guy. I purchased a 60' TCL Roku Television, I wasn't impressed with the audio, it was OK but a little flat EQ wise and the built in enhancements didn't help much. I purchased this sound bar, after reading some reviews, watching some Youtube unboxings, which were mixed but I decided to go with it. I'm not sure who these people are who review products but for me this thing is very nice for the price. Here's what I can say, I won't go through all the specs because even though I could, none of that really matters in my opinion, it's the sound quality. 1.For me, I have a relatively small one bedroom apartment, decent size. I have a 4K Firestick, PS4 that's basically it. After installation, it took a little adjusting but once I did that, I immediately could hear the difference. An important thing to note. These days, audio and video is coming from so many different sources, Youtube, Netflix, if you're still doing the cable thing... the important thing to know is this is only going to sound as good as your source output. That means if you're watching some video on Youtube or an old DVD movie, don't expect this to blow you away with sound because it all depends on how the audio source was encoded, bottom line some things will sound better than others, it's not the speakers fault necessarily. When I plugged in the PS4 and tested it out with a few games, it was immediately clear how much better the audio was. Explosions, SFX and BGM were resounding and filled with rumbling low tones and bright high to midrange panning from left to right. The EQ only has three presets MOVIE, NEWS and MUSIC, I set it to MOVIE which sounds the best to me, the subwoofer really thumps on this setting. The speaker was easy to connect, it offers three different options, an audio cable, optical and HDMI. If you're curious which one is the best, HDMI is what you want hands down, the others are just there just in case you don't have HDMI, if you have the HDMI/ARC port on your tv, you'll get the most benefit. HDMI/ARC allows your sound bar to sync with your television and it basically becomes tv's speaker. When you turn the tv on the speaker will power on, when you turn the tv off... When you operate the tv's volume control with the remove, the sound bar will respond. The subwoofer connects to the soundbar by bluetooth, took a couple of tries of getting it positioned just right and it paired with no problem. There is nothing to do afterwards, it just works. The soundbar has a few inputs that can be switch between just in case you have other inputs including connecting say your phone to play music from Spotify or something, worked well. The soundbar will go to sleep ever so often, while playing music from Bluetooth, when the soundbar is connected to your TV via HDMI/ARC which is annoying the workaround is to turn the tv on while playing via Bluetooth, my tv will go to a low power mode which seems to trick the sound bar into believing the tv is on so it doesn't go into sleep mode... Comes with a tiny remote that is almost identical to a Firestick remote, not much use for this if you're using ARC but it's ok, feels a little plasticky but I'm certain I will almost never use this Overall, I'm very happy with this sound bar, I love the size, it doesn't take up a lot of space and there are times when this bad boy really let's you know that it's there. For an apartment, it's ideal, I can't say if this would do as well in a larger more open space, I think it would, for now it performs nicely and is a great addition to my 60' TV from TCL. I'm impressed with this brand so far. ... show more

  • Better Than Expected
Style: Alto 7+ 2.1 channel w/ wireless sub
For the money, this is one of the most impressive buys I have ever made. It's great for watching movies, shows, etc but also awesome for listening to music ... really great for gaming also. Get one you will not be disappointed. I got the larger one (7+) with the subwoofer. Love it.
