  • Outstanding picture quality and substandard remote control
My husband and I had not purchased an LCD TV with a larger screen than 32 inches for more than 8 years. We bought this 49-inch Sony to replace a 46-inch Toshiba that was almost 11 years old. This Sony TV was fairly easy to set up (HINT: If you use the stand, look carefully for the little package of 4 black round-head screws from among all of the packaging. Those screws fasten the two legs for the stand to the back of the TV.) We use this TV to display content from a BluRay player and from a full-size Dell Computer, which we use with a wireless keyboard and mouse to display streaming content. We do not have cable TV and live too far away from broadcast digital TV stations so I don't know anything about the quality of the tuner. The picture quality of this TV is tremendous, and the sound is fairly good. The user interface, for set up and for changing settings, is about average and is typical. As is common these days, the printed manual contains almost no useful information about setting the various settings. The remote control for this TV is definitely substandard. The remote worked well for 6 days. Then, it froze up and stopped working altogether (except for the power on/off button and the volume controls) after I used "settings" to change the aspect ratio of the display so that I could watch a Blu-Ray movie from the early 1940s with an "Academy" aspect ratio of 4:3 (1:33 to 1). Just making that change caused the TV to be stuck with HDMI 2 (the input for my Blu-Ray player). At the bottom of the screen was the little gray box identifying the HDMI 2 input and an error message at the lower right corner of the screen, saying (falsely) that there was no signal to that input. It was impossible to clear those "notifications" from the screen. In order to get the remote control to work again, I had to use the troubleshooting trick of removing the batteries from the remote control, holding down the green power button on the remote control, and then putting the batteries back in. Then I was able to use the remote to go back into "settings" and change the aspect ratio back to "normal" [16:9] and full. Perhaps we will have to look forward to this nonsense with the remote control every time we want to change the aspect ratio. The home electronics manufacturers appear to assume that almost no one watches content with a 4:3 aspect ratio; we probably have at least 200 Blu-Ray or DVD movies with that older aspect ratio. It is frustrating that all of the LCD TV manufacturers make it so cumbersome to change the aspect ratio of the display . . . Although to be fair, the method for changing the aspect ratio is even more cumbersome with Samsung LCD TVs. ... show more

  • Fantastic LED TV
The more time I spend with this TV the more satisfied I become and if you compare cost to performance it can actually be seen as good value (although not the absolute best). If cost is no factor you could get slightly better contrast in the OLED TVs or higher resolution in 8K but I have not personally felt at any point I am left wanting more. It can get brighter than most OLEDs so while you don't get perfect contrast you get an image that still pops and has great highlights. Unfortunately, the factory settings need a little tweaking to get the most of it's capabilities which I recommend searching the internet to understand if you don't want to send it in for professional calibration. The strength of this TV seems to be if you like watching movies. The upscaling has brought new life to my 1080P blue rays. The motion is great and after a few tweaks the colors and contrast look rich but also realistic. As someone who does not own a sound bar I am also impressed with the sound. It sounds fairly full and present instead of the typical built ins that sound like the audio is traveling through a hallway before it gets to your ears. There is a small amount of light bleed in the blacks near bright lights even with the local dimming but it does not distract me much so it must be well controlled. The remote is very underwhelming but it works. Gamers will want to purchase a TV with 4K 120FPS capability to be future proof but right now most people are unable to play content at that framerate in 4K. This TV has very few flaws and while it may not sit at the pinnacle of TVs you can buy today, it does perform well in almost every way so it is great as a sum of its parts. It is hard not to be satisfied with this TV. Buy with confidence if this fits just within your budget and be excited for a great viewing experience. If you are looking for the very best regardless of cost do your research as there are many great options. ... show more

  • Sony makes the best televisions. My 3rd Sony since 1996.
1996 - Sony Trinitron KV-27S20 (27", CRT) first TV I ever bought 2007 - Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500 (40", CFL LCD) 2020 - Vizio M437-G0 (43", 4k HDR) R.I.P. 2020 - Sony Bravia X950H This year I decided to make the jump to 4k HDR. The picture quality on even the cheapest 4K HDR televisions is so much better than my old CFL LCD panel that I decided to go with a 43" Vizio M quantum (M437-G0). I was satisfied with it for the price, but after spending some time with it I began to understand the importance of brightness, color accuracy, and local dimming algorithms, not to mention motion. I'm not at all interested in keeping up with the Jonses, so despite its shortcomings I was willing to live with the Vizio until it was totally obsolete (as I had done with my two televisions prior). Unfortunately my Vizio was broken in a freak accident involving a projectile fountain pen (don't ask), which provided me an opportunity to correct my mistake and buy Sony. I didn't buy the X950H due to blind brand loyalty, but rather because it's clearly the best 49" LCD available. I considered a 48" OLED from LG, and while the OLED picture is noticeably better in terms of black level and uniformity, when watching content (rather than static test patterns) the difference is nowhere near as major as the difference between the X950H and a budget set. In other words, I feel the X950H is worth the premium over a cheap set for anybody, while OLED is worth the premium depending on certain factors. TL;DR: The X950H has amazing picture quality. In the store everything looks same-y, so it's easy to be allured by unbelievably cheap sets. Don't make the same mistake I did, just buy the Sony. By the way, my Sony TVs from 1996 and 2007 are still working as good as new. My 1996 Trinitron is even back in service as part of a retro gaming rig. Tubular, dude! ... show more
