  • great solar panel for keeping a car battery trickle-charged
Size: 20W
This Outable brand 20 Watt solar panel kit (model: ‎HSM1158-20W) is a great solar panel for keeping a car battery trickle-charged. I set it up “immediately” on a car that i don’t intend to drive this Winter and which i had been hooking up to a battery charger every few days to keep the battery charged. Now, it looks like i can just depend on the sun to do the same for me automatically. Such a deal ! The solar panel kit comes with the solar panel, three connecting cables (with SAE connectors on one end of each cable) and a charge controller. Caution when choosing which ports on the charge controller to connect each “device cable.” The three ports are labeled for solar panel, battery, and lightbulb. (There are symbols rather than words for each but easy to understand symbols.) The instructions indicate that connecting the BATTERY to the port labeled with the LAMP symbol will destroy the controller so DON’T DO THAT ! m-k ? The three cables allow connecting the battery port to the cigarette lighter (aka accessory port) or directly to the battery with alligator clips or connecting to a battery-device which uses ring-shaped eyelets. (I chose the alligator clip method.) (refer to photo of the solar panel lying on my car’s windshield.) (I also included scans of the two pages of instructions in case someone wants to review the details prior to purchasing) This device (according to the listing) can perform over the temperature range of -45°F to +185°F so that’s really all-encompassing. And if the solar panel can do its job now - one week away from the Winter solstice - it should be golden during Spring, Summer and Fall. I am very happy with this solar panel trickle-charging kit and would definitely recommend it as a very reasonably-priced way to keep a battery from dying when not in regular use. ... show more

  • Good Small <=20W Solar Kit
Size: 20W
Appears to be a well-made kit. Comes with a controller, panel, cable options for panel. Works for maintenance of a 12-volt Gel or Flooded DC battery in storage. Works for charging a 12-volt Battery supporting a low/moderate amperage draw LED Day/Night Barn Light (~5K Lumens). Not tested with any other setup. ... show more

  • Sturdy panel but not entirely waterproof
Size: 20W
Overall this is a good panel with solid performance for its size. Pros: * Rigid aluminum frame with a steel mounting bracket. * SAE connector wired directly to the raw panel output. * External PWM charge controller with heat sinks. * Several useful adapters: SAE to ring terminal, alligator clip and automotive lighter Cons: * Where the wires connect to the panel on the back are not waterproof. * The charge controller is not waterproof. * The hardware that connects the mounting bracket to the frame is kind of weird. * Not the greatest fit and finish, kind of sloppy construction compared to other similar panels I have. Really the main complaint I have is that the little plastic junction box on the back of the panel, where the wires connect to the panel itself, is totally not waterproof. It's a pretty poor-fitting, super cheap little plastic box. Good thing is there's nothing inside of it besides a couple of soldered wires, no circuitry or anything. But still in the right conditions, water could get in there and short out your panel. More realistically though, outdoor moisture, condensation, etc is going to get inside and eventually corrode the connections and wire. The charge controller itself has open, exposed circuit board, so it's not even pretending to be waterproof. But I don't really think that its the type of component you would want to just leave out exposed to the elements anyway, so no big deal here. I really like that there is an SAE connector wired directly to the raw output of the panel. It gives me more configuration options to utilize all of the panel's power without being restricted to the specs of any given charge controller. I would say this is overall a good solid panel that performs well, has a lot of useful accessories and is a pretty fair price. ... show more

  • Relatively inexpensive for 20W
Size: 20W
I'm using this on my RV with an 8Ah lithium battery to charge my laptop and cell phones when boondocking where there are no amenities. In those situations, all you have for power is what your rv house battery can spare when you drive into those remote spots. Not wanting to use up the house current that has to last for usually at least a couple of days, I put this $35 20W panel out in the Sun and attach to a battery. It comes with everything you need, including the charger and cables. 20 watt panels are usually more expensive than even two 10 watt, or 4 5watt panels, so this 20 watt saves space and time setting up. Once connected and facing some sunshine for couple hours, it's all I need to keep the electronics charged up. I give this 5 full stars and would definitely recommend it. ... show more

  • A good all-in-one solar charging kit
Size: 30W
This solar panel kit comes with a good assortment of cables and adapters and everything but the battery. It basically is an all-in-one solution with everything you need in the box to trickle charge and maintain your battery. I have been using it for the lift battery on the RV, which doesn’t get much constant use and I often forget to charge it for months on end. So having a maintenance free way to keep it in good condition is exactly what I got this solar panel kit for. The solar panel is good quality and produces power as intended. It advertises being a 30-watt panel, and I was able to hit 26 watts when I connected it to my Bluetti power station in full sun during testing. My only concern is the small piece of circuit board and pin ports that are exposed on the bottom of the charge controller. I am not sure what the port that has the pins is for, perhaps for something can be added like a thermistor, or maybe used for programming at the factory. I just imagine if water were to create a bridge between the 2, it could possibly cause a short or cause the charge controller to fail. I plan on taking some clear silicon and applying over it, so that its watertight and sealed. It may be nothing to worry about, but its better to be safe than sorry. Overall, I am pretty happy with this kit and it does a great job at keeping my battery charged. ... show more
