    • This item is a nice addition to the basic "Quad Hands"
Great accessory to the Quad Hands device. I would prefer optical quality glass lens for magnification. The acrylic plastic lens is now common but in the workshop environment scratch too easily. Finding glass lenses is almost impossible now days so little choice in that area. Other than the plastic lens issue the item fits nicely and can be configured to infinite positions due to the electrical. The LED's require 4 [four] LE1130 coin batteries. There are only two LEDs but they are bright enough to be useful. The LED's are located on the edge [6 o'clock] so the light is brightest toward the flexible shaft side of the lens. ... show more

Like all tools, spend the money and get the right thing the first time. I have their quad-hands soldering base and it works great! I was hesitant to buy this light to go with the base because how could something so cheap and does not have a power cord actually work well? Turns out, it works great! Love the light and the magnet. I like the ability to use this magnifier on multiple bases and in some cases without a base by attaching the light to a metallic surface. The magnifier is well made and has a quality feel. The Led lighting could be brighter and in most cases way too dim to be of any use.

Bought this along with the Work bench and for some reason the Magnifying glass was dropped off on a different door step. Alphidia quickly replaced it (Although, i think Amazon should have taken care of it). Great customer service! The workbench along with the magnifying glass have been a great help! Seems to built ok, but it needs more power light wise & more magnification would also help, Packaged well, no scratches, but for older person I need more lighting directed at the object working on,(Like a beam?). Still think this a good manufacture though.

Update 2021-01-10: I did end up modifying the magnifier to be able to use USB power instead of battery. It's a huge difference. I was able to disassemble the housing and remove the LED circuit board, and then it was a relatively easy matter to solder additional power leads from a USB cable onto the battery contacts. I was then able to Dremel a small notch in the case for the USB cable to pass through. The LEDs draw over 110mA when powered at 5v (see photos). Since LR1130 batteries typically have only around 48mAh to 60mAh of capacity, that means you only get about 1/2 hour of use (or less) out of each set of 4 batteries. (60 mAh / 110 mA ==> 0.54 hours) I'm reducing my review to 2-stars, because I'd really expect Quadhands to have figured this out when designing the product. Perhaps QuadHands expects that ~30 minutes of runtime is sufficient for most of their users, but I'd expect that someone investing in a (otherwise very high-quality) QuadHands station is likely to be doing a fair bit of component work at the station. Overall I still very much like the magnifier, with the USB modification I'll be able to use it a lot and be happy with it. But as it arrived out-of-the-box, it didn't fit my needs and was a disappointment. Original review: To get the important part of this review out of the way: The battery life on the lamp is AWFUL. I've had this product less than a month with occasional use and I'm already needing to replace the batteries for a fourth time. When new batteries are installed the LEDs are definitely bright enough, but after a short while they get quite dim and aren't useful. I like the design of the rest of the lamp -- especially the edgeless magnifier -- so I'm likely to work out a way to power the LEDs via USB somehow. (I'm thinking of a 3-d printed battery-shaped "plug" that can fit where the batteries normally go. I waffled between 2-stars and 3-stars for this review; overall it's good enough that I plan to keep it and continue using it, but the battery/LED brightness issue really detracts from its value. If that was resolved it'd be a 5-star product for me. Pm ... show more
