  • SCAM ALERT!
Style: Starter Kit only
Buyer beware: this company tried passing off Sengled lights as Hue lights. If I could have given this a zero star rating, I would.

  • This feels like giving your first pack of cigarettes a rating
Style: Starter Kit only
I'm obsessed with Hue bulbs, and I'm terrified of the simple fact that the company could cease to exist, and my entire household full of lights would stop working properly. Even so, the functionality is just amazing-- the integration with our Google Home is great, and I use it all the time (when my hands are full). Where the Hue system really shines is when you sync it up to your TV. During the pandemic, having a personal "movie theater" goes a long way in keeping you happy while cooped up all the time, and the Hue system is a valuable addition to mine. My only gripe is how INSANELY expensive they are. They're simply not worth $50/bulb, and the only time of the year I will buy them is around Black Friday when they dip to about $30/bulb. Docking one star for the silly pricing scheme! ... show more

  • One of the three bulbs was defective. Bad customer service from Philips Hue.
Style: Starter Kit only
I received the starter kit ($175) and 2 light strings ($79.97 per)that I ordered. I connected the Hue bridge and screwed in one of the three bulbs. I used the app to search/locate the light. The app couldnt locate it. Apparently this is pretty common. I found the serial number listed on the bulb and entered it manually into the app and it found it. All is well that ends well. I continue installing the smart switch and another bulb. The second bulb, it finds on its own. I install one of the light strings. This needs to be entered manually to be located. I get to the last bulb and it wont locate, it needs to be entered manually and there is no serial number on this bulb. I call philips hue. Israel, the rep, tells me that this happens sometimes. It is a mistake from the factory. No big deal. He says to photograph the bulb where the serial number normally is and send it with proof of purchase and they will replace the bulb. Let me just stop and say that up to this point im really fine with all of this. Things happen. Serial numbers dont get printed. Its all good. I am willing to be patient and walk through this process and the expense of mostly my time spent on the phone and sending an email. This is life. Israel knows that I bought the philips hue starter kit off amazon. I mention it several times in the course of our conversation. He sends me an email for me to reply with my pictures of the bulb lacking the serial number and my receipt from amazon which I promptly do. A couple of hours later he responds back "we regret to inform you that you are not covered under warranty because you are still covered under the retailers warranty, please contact amazon directly." Well as you all know, to make a return at amazon you need to disassemble and repack the entire item and return it. The starter kit is 175$ but the individual bulbs are $60.00. I write back to israel and tell him that I have already installed the rest of the starter kit. To disassemble it and repack and send back due to the serial number lacking seems ridiculous. I tell him If I have to do this for the one 60$ bulb, I will not be using philips hue moving forward and I will research the competition and ,ove forward with them. I wrap it up with please send me another bulb. Israel basically sends me the first stock email again. I call amazon and explain and to their credit they were very helpful. The amazon rep says he understands that I do not want to dismantle the installed philips hue system for the sake of the return. He offers me a 25$ gift card. I guess its better than nothing but It bothered me enough to write this review. I have no idea how common the bulbs coming out without a serial number are but if you get one as part of a kit you are out of luck unless you want to pack the whole thing up and send it back. ... show more

  • Poor documentation, but ultimately good results
Style: Starter Kit only
I bought this kit for my daughter for Christmas. The bulbs set up quickly and easily. The bridge was another matter. The documentation says "connect to a wifi router". You don't need to explicitly do this...you just need to connect this thing onto the network somehow...a switch, a ethernet drop, whatever. I would have figured that out quickly, if not for the next item.... No apps would connect to the bridge even though it was "on" and "connected to the network". Finally I did a factory reset of the unit and things worked. There's a button on the back and instructions on the web. No mention in the docs that came with the unit. So now it works fine, but not before we came close to giving up. Side note: The bulbs can be controlled via bluetooth directly (omitting the bridge), and we downloaded the Hue BT app for a chromebook for this. The bluetooth performance on many models of chromebooks can be very flaky. In our case we have to reboot the chromebook after shutting it down to regain connection. Beware if going this route. I *think* the bridge bypasses the bluetooth connection step. ... show more

  • Not enough functionality for the price
Style: Starter Kit only
Considering how expensive the Hue Bridge is, I was expecting to be able to program the heck out of my lights. Strangely, I got more control from a cheap LED strip with built-in WiFi and a simple app than I got from Philips Hue. I wanted to set lights by RGB; Philips provides a color wheel. I wanted to be able to turn on sections of lights to specific colors with simple commands or timers; Philips likes to hide your specially programmed “scenes” in favor of their pre-programmed defaults. You can’t set one command to perform multiple functions. I.E. to set different light bulbs to different colors and brightnesses at night, I have to set multiple “routines”. And again, if you’re programming a zone in a routine, Philips hides your specially set scenes (but not if you’re programming a room). I also received a button in my starter kit. The button has even more restricted usage. You have the option of either cycling through preset “light recipes” (various shades and intensities of white) with the button or setting a particular light recipe for a particular portion of the day that is then activated by the button. You can’t even use the switch for a simple on/off, which was one of the reasons I wanted it. I found the app to be a bit pushy about connecting to Siri, HomeKit, and having access to my location. Makes me uncomfortable, honestly. If their privacy policy and terms of use hadn’t been straightforward (as much as possible for legalese), I would’ve shipped the kit right back to Amazon. In short, if you’re wanting to actually program your lights down to the smallest detail (or just need very particular colors), this is not the setup you’re looking for… and the button is annoying. ... show more
