I rented a great house in a beautiful neighborhood — too good to be true, as it turned out. After talking to the neighbors, I found out why: this place used to have a serious rodent problem. Five tenants in five years kind of serious. Once the rodents were gone, the real nightmare began: rodent mites. If you’ve never had them, you’ve lived a charmed life. They’re nastier than bedbugs and more relentless than mosquitoes. They can go weeks without feeding, and once they get their disgusting blood meal — me — they lay an ungodly number of eggs. After wasting thousands on pest control and every supposed fix out there, I found what actually works: repellent balls, double-sided tape, and vacuuming regularly — but here’s the trick — vacuum a little diatomaceous earth so the mites die inside the vacuum instead of crawling back out. This combo finally ended months of misery. Five out of five stars — not because I loved the battle, but because this setup actually works.

The warmth from the dishwasher and pipes under our kitchen sink seemed to attract rodents constantly.
