  • It's a Brick ... House
Color: Black
Let's get one thing clear: this isn't a cell phone with a large battery. This is a battery pack that can make cell phone calls (and run Android, and play games, etc.) This phone is thick, heavy, and not stylish. My friend has an iPhone with a charger+battery case that is lighter and slightly thinner than my WP5. However, this phone feels _solid_. It feels like a brick with rubber bumpers. More than one person I've shown it to has said, "You know, I bet I can kill someone with this." I love the hardware (I'll get to the OS later.) Everything feels solid, durable, and reliable. Unlike the demo video, I've not used the screen to crack walnuts, encased it in ice, tossed it (still encased in ice) out a second story window, etc. However, I have dropped it, and the absence of that spike in heartrate is priceless. Yes, I'm sure if I do something silly enough, I _will_ somehow break it, but the mere confidence that my everyday clumsiness will not break it freed me from so many little clenches and twinges I didn't know I was making. The software costs it a star. (Disclaimer: I'm an "easy grader." If it does what I expect it to do, all of it, all of the time, then it's five stars from me.) 1: Contacts + Phone app. Unlike my prior Android phone, this one - doesn't open to my favourites screen (which was 2 columns of 4 contacts each depicted by their picture) - doesn't always display the caller name in the call history. Sometimes, it does. Other times, it only shows the caller's number. - doesn't allow me to replace the phone app. It does, but, for some reason, inbound calls won't be picked up by the replacement phone app. The new app can be used to make outgoing calls just fine (and the Google Phone app has the aforementioned favourites screen), but the only way to accept a call is to lock the phone, then select 'Answer Phone' from the lock screen. 2. The Clock app - The alarm page is one of those Wheel of Fortune UI where, to set an alarm for, say 12:30, you have to spin the minutes display until you get to your number. Yes, you can flick it and watch it spin, but the other UI where you just touch and drag the minutes hand to the 30 mark is so much faster and more exact. - It also doesn't display the "disable the next time for this alarm" control from the app. From the _notification_ I can tell it to skip the next time for a given alarm, but not the alarm app. 3. There's just something about it and alternative launcher widgets - they're very difficult to add to the Home screen, and some of them, such as [Unread Gmail], just stop working after a bit. I've tried it with Square Home and Microsoft Launchers, and in both cases, the default ways to add widgets to the Home screen do not work - Microsoft Launcher shows the widget being plopped onto the given screen, but when you open the screen, the widget is nowhere to be seen. - Square Home displays the list of widgets (or sublist, if the app has multiple possible widgets such as Chrome), but tapping on (or pressing and holding) the widgets don't deploy them. If you go into Square Home settings | Behavior & UI | System widget picker, it will allow you to select the widget and lay it on the Home screen. However, the [Unread Badge] widget just stops working after an hour or so. Now, launchers having issues with widgets (and vice versa) aren't _directly_ the fault of the Oukitel WP5, but I've used the same launchers with my prior Umidigi Power phone without issues. Additionally, I've tested Nova and Niagara Launchers just to see if any app widgets (as opposed to widgets that come with the Launcher); they don't. I can't help but wonder if there's something about the WP5 that's causing this. Long story short, if you love having a bunch of widgets on your Home screen, this isn't the phone for you. If you don't care about them, or, like me, can adapt to not using them, then you're going to like this phone. So long as you have large pockets and a sturdy belt.... ... show more

  • It's a good choice.
Original review: For what I paid for my last two very delicate phones, I've finally gotten a phone that can stand up to my clumsiness, activity level, and high battery use. I walk dogs seven days a week and while I'm out, I have audio books or youtube videos playing in my headphones. This phone has yet to die on me even once, and I've had it for going on two months I think. With the battery demand I place on it, I expect it to do so eventually, but yesterday I got it to the 15% battery warning...and two hours later, two hours in which I was STILL using it regularly (although not constantly) and not on power save mode...it was at 14%. Damn fine phone. It's sturdy, solid, a bit heavy but that's only a problem when I drop it on my foot. Which, of course, I have. *EDIT: I marked this as 4 stars initially, but despite one small issue i'm upping it to 5. I have put this thing through SO MUCH and it is still just fine. (May 2021) That one issue is sometimes when I drop it hard and it lands on the corner where the SIM cards are, the SIM tray gets a little loose and I have to poke it. Resolves after a good poke, worst case scenario I have to get a safety pin or something and poke the little hole. It's pretty damn minor considering what this has been through. Update #2, Dec 2021: Still going strong. Seeing how this is more than a year old, it might be worth checking out some newer models. But I'm not getting a new one any time soon. This thing is still doing just fine! I dropped it in the gym the other day and it slammed into the door of a locker, the bench, and then the floor and I just picked it up and stuck it in my locker. This woman watched it happen and said something like "Ouch, that MUST have cracked!" or something like that. I had to take my headphones off and ask her to repeat it because not only did it not crack (I didn't even check it: if it hasn't cracked by now it's NOT going to) everything was still working just fine. SIM card slot still a weak point but most of the time I can just apply pressure to the rubber cover (that keeps it waterproof) and it resolves without needing to be messed with directly. Seems like it gets better the longer I have it, honestly, but that might be because it becomes more familiar and more customized to me. I've not had a phone survive this long since the OG Nokia 3310. I had it in silver. I legit used that thing as a weapon at one point and it survived. It was still going fine nearly two years in when I lost it. I'll let you know when this Oukitel gets to two years, and I have faith it will. Just not the weapon part, I hope! April 29, 2022. The screen has a flaw. Some moisture has gotten beneath the gorilla glass (which has acquired some scratches over time), there must be a flaw somewhere. My guess is some of the rubber around the sides has a worn spot, sweat got in (it was in my bra at work), and actually it looks like it's drying out and may get back close to normal. However, I think it's time to invest in a new one. I'm still pleased with this phone and would order it again if I wasn't able to afford to choose another more recent model. I'm going to try the WP17 and see how that does--looks like it has some great reviews, and I'm sure I'll enjoy playing with the night vision doolie. Anyway, I thought I'd check in and update: it finally sustained some normal phone damage. It's still working just fine, it might just come back completely, but the flaw is there and it's just time to put it to rest. It is still in absolutely great shape for a backup phone, should someone I know's delicate little device crumble in their hands. I don't think I will have any problems with it for now, and look forward excitedly to a newer model. Here's hoping it also makes it 2½+ years! ... show more
