  • Fast, powerful. GET A COOLING PAD
PROS: Fast: 8th gen i7 and the 1060 do the job well. you won't find any lag - no disappointment in this area Superb connectivity - Seamless, no dropping of connection Screen: 144 HZ - refresh rate is as good as it gets. I bought it at $ 1319. Good performance for the price so far no issues in terms of the hardware. Will get rid of McAfee soon. I use iobit malware and windows defender is already preloaded in the system. CONS: This thing is big and heavy. trust me you can feel the weight. Not something to carry around often. The charger is the size of a small tablet. Considering the hardware, it heats up fast. Fan speeds are not adjustable. You use microsoft word/ excel and watch a movie, this thing hits 94 degrees celsius. Gaming and this thing will hit the roof. You can tone down the GPU....But that's not why i bought this comp. Invest in a good cooling pad - I feel this is a MUST. Speakers are Not great.. Didn't expect that and i use earphones most times or a bluetooth connected speaker. Its a finger print magnet. Its been 10 days only. Will update on how long this thing lasts ... show more

  • Review with some Benchmarks
Out of the box this machine scored a 1143 on Cinebench. Running a stress test on this laptop saw the CPU temperature spike to over 95 degrees for a little bit until the fans kicked into turbo mode. Then temperatures under 100% load were in the high 80 degrees C to low 90s. Idle CPU temperatures are in the high 40 degrees C to about 55 degrees C. Battery life is awful at stock settings and you will be lucky if you get two hours out of it. Using common sense battery life saving options like turning down the monitor brightness, changing power profiles, disconnecting peripherals, and turning off the keyboard back light can see you get closer to two and a half to three hours of battery life with non gaming use. Average FPS for CS GO is over 200 FPS at max settings. Apex Legends plays at around 100 FPS on medium settings. Athem, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and Battlefield V play in the 60 to 100 FPS range on low or low/medium settings. The OMEN software could use a lot of work. It is easy to use but the programing of MACRO keys only allows for typing. It doesn't give options to launch programs or to access shortcut links or anything else cool. The keyboard light is pretty cool in that it has four different color zones. But it doesn't have any other features besides static color or off. The laptop build quality feels good and has a metal feel to the case around the keyboard and track pad with hard plastic on the bottom. The screen is beautiful and the 144hz refresh rate with Gsync is a great option for the price. I am happy that I purchased this laptop. If you want something that can do some gaming and still be a little portable then this is a good choice. Just keep the battery life in mind if you are buying this to use on the go a lot. ... show more

  • (Revised) - One of the best and most powerful laptops out there at an ultra affordable price!
2019-March-19: I want to take a few minutes to rewrite a quick review I posted earlier before actually taking the necessary amount of time to actually diagnose problems or what appear to be issues with the system. Originally, I was under the impression there was an issue with the chipset in terms of installation of software repeatedly stalling out after like 5 to 10 minutes of run time. Later, I determined this issue to be more specific to the onboard M.2 SSD SATA connector or controller as it seemed like a traditional 2.5" SSD drive will work completely fine for a full complete Windows 10 setup and installation of a bunch of applications. After having the chance to test this out on a second system originally ordered from Best Buy before the purchase from Amazon due to wait times for delivery (Amazon in 2 days vs. BestBuy.com of more than a week) I think I need to re-evaluate things again and significantly increase the overall rating back to 5 stars-- or rather scratch that, I am only reducing it by 1 star for the following two reasons... 1. The almost useless OMEN key replacing the HOME key on the keyboard. Why did they not add the Omen key as a new separate key instead of having to replace one of the primary keys on a traditional keyboard? Especially, considering that the key only opens the old desktop version of the OMEN Command Center and does not open the newer Modern U.I. or Windows Store version of the App. Maybe, they will write a small update that can change this and have it open the new App instead of the old one.... 2. The only other reason why I am lowering the rating from 5 stars is strictly because there is no included optical drive when there is an entire empty cavity and space for a Blu-ray drive. Sure would have been nice to have the ability to at least insert your own Blu-ray drive or burner into that empty drive cavity.... but oh well, guess an external USB one will have to suffice. After further testing and the chance to test a second system, it appears that the only issue is... believe it or not... simply having or not having an SD card inserted in the card reader! Yes, you read that correctly. If an SD card is inserted it appears that installation of some applications will seem to stall out at spots each time but if you eject the card the installation immediately continues. When there is no card inserted, I was successfully able to complete a Windows 10 setup of this system with Microsoft Office, a bunch of Cyberlink software (which are applications that posed problematic with a SD card inserted), and a bunch of other apps. All quickly and smoothly without the SD card inserted as compared to having the card inserted. This was identical, for the most part, on both systems. I do not believe the card reader is faulty, I believe it just has to do with the way the card reader is connected to SATA and controller interfaces. It seems to be able to read the SD card okay and completely without issue but for some reason when installing certain apps, it may cause significant long and lengthy delays in installing the application. End of Update. ----------------- Original Review: Okay, I just purchased this laptop on March 13th and just received it today (March 16) from Amazon. Great service and fast shipping with Prime. The box had some physical damage to it around the corners but fortunately there does not appear to be any noticeable damage or defects with the laptop itself. The screen seems to be really great, bright and clear. No dead pixels either... yet... it is still early to tell how well this will hold up but I wanted to write a pre-review to mention a few things about the laptop features compared to what it may look like from the images on the product page on Amazon. I will update the review later after I use the laptop for a few weeks and report on how well it holds up. I was so pleased to see that this model does in fact have a SD Card Reader installed. Looking at some of the images on Amazon for the product I was pretty nervous that it will not have one. Shocking because everywhere else I check a description of this same model they all say that it does include one-- yes it does, so that is a huge relief! Also, I do not know why they show the WSAD keys as if they are in "red plastic keys" but they are NOT red plastic. In fact, I do not think there is anyway to make them even look like they do in the picture! You can adjust the colors of them with the software (OMEN Control Panel-- make sure you download it from the Windows Store though) but you still cannot turn the whole key "red" from what I can tell. Just the lettering and the frame or outline around the key itself. Let's see, the other area I want to address that may cause some confusion due to the images included with this product model on Amazon, is with the ability to attach additional displays to it. If you look at the one image on this website, it will indicate that it does NOT support or include "Triple Display Support". This is not true. Yes, you certainly can connect multiple monitors to it and although I have not yet tried to span any of them with NVIDIA Surround, I am quite certain that you can use Surround to span three (3) additional monitors together as if they were one (1) display. How do you do this? Connect one display to HDMI. A second to Mini-Display port. Then connect a third display to the USB-C (or Thunderbolt) port. (You may need an adapter cable to connect an HDMI or DVI or Display port monitor to the USB-C port though.) You will then have four (4) simultaneous displays all at once including the laptop display. All four displays will also be on the NVIDIA GeForce 1060 graphics adapter as this is the first and only gaming laptop I have tried that actually has the internal display on the NVIDIA adapter instead of the Intel Graphics display. Hope this information will help some of you in choosing your laptop. I know this would have certainly helped me if I had not seen the incorrect information shown in some of the product images on Amazon's product page for it. Whew! What a relief to have received the laptop finally and that it is exactly (except for an internal optical drive) the way I would want it to be! If this laptop included a DVD-RW or Blu-ray RW optical drive and did not have the Omen key in place of the normal "Home" key button on the keyboard, I would say this would be the ultimate laptop and the exact very same laptop I have been looking for within a very reasonable budget. That is if you want one for under $1500. More to come later after I have had a chance to use the laptop for a month or so and can see how it holds up over a longer period of time. ... show more

  • Best gaming laptop I've had so far
I got the GTX 1060 version and you can stream or record games in 1080p 60 FPS to Twitch or Youtube no problem, running them in high settings. Games like Rainbow Six: Siege, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Killing Floor 2, Ghost Recon. Will also run any emulators like PCSX2 PS2 emulator or Dolphin Nintendo emulator on high settings and while recording no problem. Blender rendering and video editing is also fast. For anything you want to do under 4k or 1440p this thing can tackle any games you want to stream or record with OBS in 1080p 60 FPS on ultra settings. Also feels reliably built, it has some heft to it. I got the 17 inch GTX 1060 and it's definitely not light. I had an Asus ROG before this and would recommend this. Cheaper than an MSI or Asus ROG with same specs but with the same quality. ... show more
