  • Great Dollar value! but some issues , please read if you plan on buying this.
Color: Blue
This is a great deal considering the price that these things go for .If you're on tight budget and absolutely need a rig , I'd say go for it , it'll get the job done. It looks similar to a few other name brand rigs , and will work just as good in most cases . The product looks good and has a nice silky finish of black lead based paint and is a fraction of the price of others like it. I'm thankful that there's at least an option for a starving film maker who needs a rig. Despite all of this , I'd opt for something else if I could do it over . here's why ........ The handles are at the top of the list of things that I don't like , they dont' tighten all the way ! They stood loose even after i almost broke my finger trying to tighten them . I eventually decided to use a vice grip pliers to tighten the hole in the attachment so that it grips the rod tighter, and it worked for the most part . 90% tight now , which works a lot better than the 50% i was dealing with before . Grip tape on the rod could probably close the gap the rest of the way. The handles aren't very adjustable at all , and the cross bar which holds them isn't as long as it should be, maybe 2 - 3 inchs shorter than it should be. Although the rig looks a lot like the more expensive ones , the metal isnt as solid as most other's . The rods seem more like metal straws rather than pipes . However, the fact that they aren't as dense also makes it lighter , which can be a plus , so i don't see it as a real issue . The shoulder pad isn't comfortable , and the blue fasteners are a little smaller than average. something else to be aware of ......... I ordered this product from New Harbor , which is most likely where you'll be getting it from . The shipment took at least 2 weeks or more to arrive , and it was missing the release plate . another 2 weeks of emails , filing claims and getting in contact with Neewer got me the release plate which arrive another 2 weeks later . Over 5 - 6 weeks!! to get what iI payed for and have a working rig . I'm glad that New Harbor made it right in the end , and i commend them for that ,but it was one the most painstaking purchases that I've ever made . I was under prepared for 2 video shoots and spend hours of my life that I'll never get back writing back and forth emails , as if I was trying to con them out of a $6 release plate . Initially I tried to avoid the hassle of the emails and waiting for it to be shipped from china . I went to the biggest and most popular photo & video stores in New York that you can think of , and none could find a plate that would match this rig. I even went to the main site and amazon store for Neewer and New Harbor , and couldn't find this piece there either . No name , and no part numbers for this thing or the rig itself . With all that said .............. I'd still recommend this rig to someone who's on an extreme budget , you just can't buy this type of rig for this price . It's not something that I would plan on building an elaborate setup around , but if definitely works just as well as a rig that costs 3 times as much if you're willing to make the adjustments that i spoke of. It's so inexpensive that you can sell it later on and get just about what you payed for it !! so yes , I'd recommend this product to those who are on a serious budget, and willing to deal with it's shortcomings. ... show more

  • Will you need new rails to accommodate a better Mattebox??
Color: Blue
So...I know I gave it only three stars, but there is much to love about this rig. It is a very good build quality with a really nice quick release "head" who's plate/chip fits my Cayer Tripod Head. But here is where this rig falls short. Its RODS are a just "larger" enough in diameter that the really nice FOTGA DP3000 Matte Box system will not fit with out a lot of fuss, WD40 or some olive oil to grease the rods, just to get the Matte Box mounted. And thats a shame because it simply means you will have to fork out more of your cash. The FOTGA DP3000 comes with a set of rails that I checked to see if the rest of the Neewer Rig could "lock down" on them and it did with ease. So I have ordered a set of 20mm Fotga RODS to replace the ones included with the NEEWER rig. Its a shame that RODS are not machined to an exact standard so that they are all interchangeable. The hand grips on the Neewer RIG are respectably comfortable and the only plastic used on the Rig is on the end-caps, so it would be safe to say this will provide years of use. If you don't need a Matte Box then you are fine. You will need a lenses support for longer lenses. I would have given 3.5 Stars if possible, so I rounded it "down" not up because of its limitations in expanding without replacing the rods. And on more thing, the RODS are not smooth, they have a texture, which may make for the in crease in diameter. For locking down its probably good, but is it really necessary? And the two rods will loosen up and will need tightening every so often...more than not actually. For the money it's a Five star purchase. If you are needing to expand as I said, its a Three star purchase. Cheers!!! ... show more

  • Love this DIY rig, takes a little manipulation but cheap(er) and worth it.
Color: Blue
Really works well. I had to use a wrench to tighten all the keys (with a rag underneath to protect the finish), but I used it with Neewer follow focus, CN-160 led light (added battery with charger), and Takstar mike. So for less than $200 I had a pretty cheap, yet functional home camera / video set up for DSLR. Once the follow, system, and camera were a team, I added the Opteka dual cold shoe splitter with the mike and light, and presto: you have the basis for what I think are the essentials for a do-it-yourself version of a home video camera. I videotaped my first son's birth with this a week ago, and the results are amazing. I don't have editing software, but if I did I imagine the quality would be film quality (which I will do when I have professional software). I am a little too lazy to upload a video, but attached is a pic. Follow the comments for the follow focus: it really has to have the screws tightened for a correct follow. You can not really see in the picture, but a rubber band under the follow connector ring is essential for fit and proper adjustment (found this tip on youtube) and than I used 2 small cable ties to attach the two sides of the ring, since for my Cannon lens did not fit for the follow connector ring (you can kind of see that in the pic, on the left hand side). Also, A rubber band keeping the focus securely snug against the follow is key as well, since the two can often become dis attached- which as all DIYer's know is not something you do not want to deal with during a live shoot. The BEST thing about this set up to, with the focus and light, is that still shots are a breeze. Get your back and side lighting, turn on your LED, and use your easy focus. The subject is better illuminated, and your gross motor skills take care of focus. Anyway- there are millions of combos out there, this is mine, and I love it.
