Monoprice HTP-1 provides superb 16 ch Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Auro-3D and Dirac Live processing

The Monoprice HTP-1 provides superb 16 ch Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Auro-3D and Dirac Live processing with a high signal to noise SN ratio and planned upgrade path for HDMI 2.1 and 8K video. This is a bargain at this price compared to the competition. I bought mine direct from the Monoprice website and looking forward to hooking it up with the 9.4.2 surround system once my home theater is ready.

BEWARE

I wish I bought via Amazon and not directly from manufacturer, but did not want to wait long for it. I say if you really want it then buy via Amazon ONLY. The unit worked for only 2 days then hang on Monolith splash screen and could never boot all the way anymore - not even after rebooting, just a bricked unit, I updated to the latest firmware right after hooking it up and this happened out of the blue after 2 days (see the image) another issue was bluetooth connectivity, could never pair it to anything while it worked, $500 additional license fee if you want multi-sub feature Dirac Live is also very prohibitive but I was aware of it ... Wish I bought it via Amazon and waited since $60 shipping that you pay when buying directly from Monoprice is NOT REFUNDABLE even if the unit is defective!!! That is UNACCEPTABLE. 2nd thing is the reviews on their page ARE NOT TRUSTWORTHY. Why? My review was taken down after 1 day - looks like no critics is allowed there! If you try to re-post your review there it says you have already posted even though your previous one is not showing up and the product maintains PERFECT rating... I will now AVOID this company as a whole. Very sad these people are treating customers this way...

Best Pre-Amp on the Market

I bought this directly from Monoprice, not through Amazon. I saw another reviewer saying that they had an issue where it bricked after 2 days and they were lamenting the shipping costs. I had a similar experience. It did not brick, but a couple of the audio channels did not work at all. I contacted Monoprice and they overnighted me a new unit and provided me a shipping label to return the defective one. Now, regarding the unit itself. First off, this is a pre-amp. It has zero, zip, nada built in amplification. You MUST have external amplifiers to drive your speakers. Secondly, this unit is for enthusiasts. If you're just looking for surround sound in the sense that you want sound to come out of multiple speakers that are around your room, then just go with an integrated unit, hook up your speakers, run its built in stuff and be done. However, if you're looking for something that can take your audio experience to the next level, and are willing to spend a little time to get it there, this is the unit for you. I am currently running a 7.2.4 setup with Revel speakers being driven by a 3x300 Emotiva amp for the LCR and a 9x200 Monolith amp for the surround and height channels. In order to utilize the built-in Dirac optimization, you will need to purchase a calibrated microphone separately - they run about $100. You will also need to run this from a computer that is within your listening room, as the HTP-1 has no built-in menus. It also has no way to control the unit from the front panel, other than turning it on/off and adjusting the volume. It does come with a very basic remote control, as it is assumed you will be tying this in with some type of universal remote. Additionally, you can control everything from the units IP menu, which can be accessed through any standard web browser. Once again, I would recommend using a computer for both your initial speaker and the Dirac calibration (which you have to use anyway) as it can be clunky to navigate on your phone. Please note that Dirac is a software that you download and install on your computer. It is not built into the unit itself. The unit is licensed to be able to be used with the Dirac software. Dirac will scan your network, find the device, and then allow you to run its calibration. This calibration is not crazy difficult, but it also is not stupid simple. You're going to have to do some reading before you run it and refer back to the material as you run it. Frankly, I think they could simply it a bit to make it more user friendly but, once again, this is enthusiast gear. After setting everything up I can honestly say that it is a night and day difference from the sound I was getting from my Yamaha 3080 receiver - and I liked the sound I was getting from my Yamaha receiver. This is just on a different level. I did apply the Harman +6 bass curve for a bit punchier bass. I also purchased the multi-sub EQ for the extra $500, and I think it has been worth every penny. The unit itself has had a few quirks - such as audio drop-out when watching streaming content as it switches to commercials, between sources, etc. - but they have consistently released firmware that has improved the device and any specific issues that I have experienced since I purchased mine in December of 2020. As of the time of this writing (May '21), my unit is working flawlessly. I am giving this 4 stars because I believe there is room for improvement. It also doesn't come with HDMI 2.1, which isn't all THAT important at the moment, but I wanted to list my reasons for not giving it 5 stars overall, even though I do give it 5 stars for performance and value.

Amazing processor

Best processor/AVR I've ever owned. It works so well in every way, and the audio quality is the best I've ever heard.
