  • Chose to spend twice as much on this Jet for less options than a Grizzly, and I'm glad I did
Style: Deluxe Pro Band Saw Kit
I was comparing this bandsaw to grizzly, the grizzly come with more options with a lower price. But how stout is the grizzly? By the way, you can buy a grizzly from their website for a lot less than amazon, and more models to choose from. Grizzly has a 1HP, 2 speed, 14 inch bandsaw with comparable guides and fence and miter gauge included for 1/2 the price of the Jet. I came very close to buying the grizzly for ~$500 but I ended up buying this Jet for ~$1000 plus another $120 or so for the rip fence, and still no miter gauge. But I'm going to give this thing 5 stars. I bought a Jet mortiser, and you can tell the second you put the thing together that it is put together right. Jet just makes quality tools, and I figured I can risk $500 on a grizzly or pay $1000 and know I'm going to get a quality machine. I was going to buy the 1HP Jet, but I decided to but this one for $200 more. If you look at the guide blocks, 1/4 hp extra, no need for riser blocks... you're gonna pay $1000 on your 1HP to get it where you want it and it still won't be as well built as this one. Every piece on this saw is just stout. It took me about 10 minutes to start cutting with it, it has a mediocre blade that it comes with but even with this blade it still cuts great. No vibrations, just a well built stout machine. The rip fence could be better, you have to put it together and square it out, not too hard. But when you get it all squared, it doesn't slide too well and when you go to tighten it it moves a little. So you have to factor in that it's gonna move when you line it up. But I've gotten used to it and it's not too bad. But the saw itself, 5 stars all the way. I'm going to eventually replace all my shop tools with Jet. Go to Grizzly's website, look at all the saws they have, all the colors and anniversary specials, etc... and then you have to ask yourself, why all the gimmicks? Who cares what color their saw is? Or if it has fancy gold letters etc... I care about how my saw performs, not what color it is. The "polar bear" model even costs more than the exact same saw in a different color on amazon (same price on grizzly's website). Why would anyone pay more for the exact same saw in a different color? Bottom line, if you have to use all these gimmicks and specials to sell your saws, then they must not speak for themselves. Now look at Jet. Everything on a Jet is plain, same color, and SOLID as a rock. Jet doesn't lower their prices to compete with the others because they know that people who want quality and a warm fuzzy that they know exactly what they are getting are willing to pay for it. I'm not saying Grizzly saws aren't quality, I don't know. But if you use gimmicks etc.. then your saw isn't speaking for itself. If you want to spend $1000 and know exactly what you are getting, buy this saw. ... show more

  • Solid Jet quality
Style: Deluxe Pro Band Saw Kit
As a woodturner, getting good equipment in the shop makes a huge difference. This replaces a cheap bandsaw I got used for a few dollars locally. That was my first bandsaw, so I thought it was normal for a bandsaw to leave a surface like a wavy potato chip behind. Then I got this thing, and it's completely solid. I picked this partly because I have the Jet 1642 lathe, and I thought it would be nice to have my main power tools match in brand and color. Even with the stock blade, which as usual is nothing special at all, it leaves a great finish. And the strong motor gets through everything I've thrown at it, though I've never tried to resaw the full 12” capacity. I imagine that would be pretty taxing. As the other reviewers have mentioned, the saw part of this thing is heavy. Get your base in place first, get a buddy or two to help you lift this in place, and save your back and hands from trying to do it yourself. The blade guides are all ball bearing wheels, no steel blocks. That means they are way easier to adjust, and way more gentle on the blade. The height adjustment is smooth and easy, and the tensioning release arm means no more excuse for leaving your blade under constant tension (which wears out the wheel bearings a bit, the blade a bit, and the tires a bit). Just figure out some way to make sure you remember to retension it before you turn it on the next time! I can tell I'm going to put this thing to good use for many years to come. I do think for the price they could have thrown in a fence of some sort. That seems like a poor decision. ... show more

  • Good Build Quality - Accurate Cuts - Some Design Issues
Style: Deluxe Pro Band Saw Kit
A decent, capable bandsaw. Build quality is good. Most features are beefy and well made. The cabinet is top quality. The machine doors/hinges are a little light weight but adequate to the task. The built-in 'extended' height was the tipping factor for my purchase. A couple design features I believe could be improved. The blade tightening system is not too well designed. The little knob at the top of the machine can reek havoc on your hands and wrist when going for high tension. The nut and screw system is a little confusing for straightening the guide arm. The built-in scale on the unit is of no use. I found it to be not accurate. I use Timber Wolf blades and visually tension to get the most stable blade action. The access to the lower bearing guide is made for small hands. The base cabinet is very nice. The solid cast armature of the saw seems beefy and stable. However when the machine is running (or when not) there is a bit of vibration that just shouldn't be there on a machine like this. You can press towards the top of the machine and it will spring back and forth (to a small degree) like a whip antenna. I don't see it at all affecting the quality of the cut but it lowers my admiration for the machine. With all that said, I am achieving very high quality, accurate cuts. Re-sawing thin, wafer-like slabs without drift works amazingly well on this machine. I've incorporated the Woodhaven fence to get extremely accurate, stable cuts. Overall it's been a very good, affordable machine. It arrived in two boxes on a pallet. The base in one box and the whole unit, with motor attached in another (heavy) box. A cinch to put together, using the box/styrofoam as leverage. ... show more
