  • Deep dark on steel
Size Name: Pint Color: Iron - Steel - Nickel
I used it to darken some steel door frames. The black is deep and rich, but at the same time, you can see the undertones. I used a fine brush and 2-3 coats. Preparation is key. Any grease, even a fingertip, can be noticed, so make sure you thoroughly clean the surface before. I use mineral spirits.

  • This product works!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to repair the finish on a large bronze deer. During the restoration of the concrete pedestal that the bronze sits on particles of cement got on the deer and caused the finish to be removed due to the alkalinity of the cement. The Jax finishing solution was very easy to use. It took very little time for the finish to start appearing . I used the dawn dish detergent as recommended to clean the area and remove the oil finish. The surface came out as a deep brown exactly what was needed to match the existing finish. The entire job took about 30 minutes. Yes the product is more expensive but it is well worth the extra expense. I had tried the liver of sulfur and it did not work at all. It did no mater how hot I made the solution or the bronze deer. With the Jax I did not do any heating. To top it all of, the liver of sulfur was not returnable. A total waste of money and hours time for a product that did not work. The Jax Metal brown finish worked perfectly. Now the bronze deer looks great . Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Disappointed
Size Name: Pint Color: Iron - Steel - Nickel
This is my first experience with chemical blackeners. Was hoping to make a black oxide type of finish on a nightstand project. As the pictures show, the Jax Metal Finish rusted the steel frame instead. Used mild steel tubing and angle iron for the frame. Prepared the metal with a degreaser and bead blasted the surface smooth and free of mill finish. I applied the Jax Metal Finish with a foam brush. It took about 15 minutes to coat the entire frame. The metal went from a wet black look to green and finally rust colored in that short amount of time. Once finished, I rinsed with water, dried with a rag and heated with a torch to drive out the water. The next day, I spent several hours using 0000 steel wool and dipping into more Jax Finish, I was able to get the color down to a dark blackish/ brown finish. The directions are simple so I don't know if I made a mistake preparing the metal, but the results were definitely not as advertised. Hopefully you have better luck with this product. ... show more

  • I really want to love this product but...
I have been embossing metal for years and aging the artwork with paint. I tried different types of paint than I heard of this product. I was so excited to get it but was expecting moret. I really like the idea of a chemical reaction that blackens the metal and make aged look last longer than paint and don’t chip. But I found very difficult to work with this product. I understand you need a clean surface in order to the reaction work. I thoroughly cleaned the pieces with Dawn more than 3 times and washed the soap very well. The product takes sometime to work and it’s very difficult to predict where and how it’s going to blacken each spot. Although washing thoroughly the surface it doesn’t blacken homogeneously. Another thing I didn’t like about it is color I got in the creases of the embossed metal. I got a dull brownish that looks like rust instead of the dark blackish metal color I was expecting. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but I watched a bunch of videos in youtube and followed them step by step but I still can’t get a professional result. ... show more
