  • First one stripped out with first use... Modified the second one to be a strong performer.
Color: Hex Shank
The media could not be loaded. Original Review: one star. I tried this with my 18v cordless drill and it got stuck in the wood. I reversed the drill and the shaft came unscrewed. I went at it again with my powerful corded drill and it stripped the threads right out of the cutterhead. I think if I order one of these again I will JB Weld the shaft into the cutter head so it can be backed out and it would be stronger. This is really poorly made. There are so many of these things on Amazon I wish I could tell which one was a quality tool. Second Review. 4 stars in modded form based upon performance. 3 stars average for having to modify it to work. I went ahead and ordered a replacement. I decided to reinforce this one with JB Weld. I removed the grease from the auger bit that it shipped with. Then sanded the surfaces I was going to epoxy. I filled the inner threads with JB Weld then drove the shaft in with a drill into a piece of wood. I applied the JB weld to the outside and tried it out the next day after giving it a full 24 hours to harden. This thing works really well now! I used my Dewalt 8.5amp corded drill and had no trouble with splitting the wood or getting the bit stuck in the wood. You just have to drive the bit in near the end of the piece of wood and it splits it with a satisfying crack. I would recommend a strong drill with a second handle so you are less likely to injure your wrist. It works very well to use this with a drill press. I got very small kindling easily with mine. However I found that the bit wobbles when chucked in the drill press so I would give it 4 stars performance wise after modification. If you use a hand drill you probably won't notice a wobble. With this modification I have had no trouble with this bit and have been having fun splitting wood safely. Only time will tell if this thing holds up longterm, but I am really glad I went ahead with this simple mod. ... show more

  • Uses an SDS Bit!!
Color: Round Handle
I ordered two of this on November 18th. They arrived on December 16th. each bit comes in a flimsy plastic box, with VERY tight tolerances that make it almost impossible to slip the box back together to the bit safely. Traditionally, expensive or specialty bits come in a heavy-gauge plastic "slip together" box for storage, which works great. These boxes, not so much. The main thing to know is that the type of bit varies! Nowhere in the description of the product does it say it requires an SDS-based drill, but one of the bits looks like an SDS bit shank to me. That's designed for a rotary hammer type of device, not a simple hand-drill. The other bit looks like it is TRYING to be SDS, but it's quite there. I'm not really sure what they were thinking. See the attached picture for more information. The design is 2-piece. Why? This product could be so much better if it were 1-piece. No idea why anyone would bother making this 2-pieces - it's just going to be issues, as other reviewers have indicated. I will probably end up welding them together if I can. I'm giving this 3 stars now, based on the flimsy storage box, shank issues and suspicion about the 2-piece design. Once I get a chance to use the bits to see how they perform, I may revise. ... show more

  • Good not great
Color: Hex Shank
First impressions review: Good not great. Once I understood the limitations of this bit, it did what it was designed to do. This is not for splitting large logs and will work best (in my opinion) taking already split logs and making them smaller. This bit will be ideal for splitting wood for kindling and small fires. Also, the limitations of this bit will be in line with the drill itself. If you have a weak drill, this bit may not work so great. If you try and drill into a piece too big, you will inevitably get it stuck in the wood and will be really hard to get out and will unwind at the drill head. This bit is handy when used properly. However, I wonder if a hatchet may do as good or better. Final though, I do not recommend drilling into the wood vertically but horizontally. It will be incredible hard to stabilize the wood this way and will leave the wood just spinning with you having little leverage. Keeping it horizontal gives you much more ability to keep the piece in place and gives a smaller distance needed to travel. Dunno if I would buy again. Maybe? Maybe time will change my opinion! ... show more

  • Works great on straight grain, gets stuck sometimes, not a big deal
Color: Hex Shank
I have experienced BOTH what I see in the positive and negative comments.. Take it for what it is. It works great ON STRAIGHT GRAIN logs. Yes, it gets stuck. It's a wedge of sorts. If you drive it into mixed grain a stump or where a branch grew, it's likely to get stuck at some point. I'd give a full 5 stars if they gave us a way to free it. Here's what I did: I clamped on big vice grips to slowly unscrew it. On one log, I drove a wedge in to lessen the torque needed to unscrew it. What they "should" do: If they drill a hole near the edge, I feel like you could insert a long steel rod and have plenty of torque to unscrew it when it gets stuck. When it works, it's awesome. When it gets stuck.. not a big deal (for me). PS. you can't use drill to unscrew it. The chuck is threaded into the cone and simply comes loose. PPS. Warning: you can injure your wrist with your drill torque if you're not careful. Also...had the log start spinning when it got stuck. :) ... show more

  • Only works on small very dry logs
Color: Hex Shank
I tried this on several logs and it kept getting stuck. Then it would not un-screw from the log and got stuck because the bit would just un-screw from the big splitter piece. For this to work, you need to only use it on very small and very dry logs.
