  • Saves electricity
Our power company gave us a rebate if we would get to this thermostat. I don't find it to be very easy to figure out but I am pretty old and not very tech savy. It does learn - I turned it down to a night temperature at about 10:00 for a few nights and now it does it every night!. I think it will be great for me and I will get better at using it, I haven't had it for more than a very few months. I'm sure that it will save me on my power bill. ... show more

  • What an absolute waste of time and money!
Firstly, I must say that I was impressed with the packaging and installation instructions. Both made the installation process go smoothly. Therein, is where the good news ends. For reference, I bought two Google Nest Learning Thermostats and one temperature sensor. One of the thermostats was easily installed connected seamlessly to the Nest app for features and functionality. I never connected the temperature sensor as that was due to work with my second thermostat, which was a dud. I managed to connect the second thermostat to wifi once, for a fleeting moment, then lost connection and was never able to come back online. In spite of hours of troubleshooting, by myself and with google support, it never worked...I should have guessed with the endless hours spent on the phone and online with tech support that the process was not going to be easy. Having me take photos of this and that, sending them here and there, twitter, email, e-chat, phone, filling out serial numbers on forms (by the way the S/N on the device is literally in 2pt font), confirming this and that....on and on it went....Little did I know that the fun really began when they finally offered me a replacement. I was first told that they would not send me out a replacement until they had received the dud...but I asked....how would I heat my home while I waited for them to receive the dud, process the return, and then ship out my new one after another 7-10 days? Crickets... I persisted...so Google magnanimously offered to put a $280 hold on my credit card for the cost of the replacement thermostat. But wait! Haven't I already paid for the one that I have here that is not working properly? It seems Google doesn't trust me to return their dud device even after hours (probably about 10 hours) of troubleshooting it with them. I guess they think I must have money and time to burn. As the issue continued, $280 was reduced to $180, because it was determined by the last rep that I spoke to that the whole thermostat did not need replacing, just the face. He assured me the rest of the unit was working just fine. Odd, as that was not the impression all the other reps had given. What I did learn in my hours of troubleshooting is that wifi connectivity issues are fairly common with Google thermostats, however, what should be an easy return process is ridiculously complicated and not really done with the customer in mind. No, sorry for the inconvenience, how can we make that better, here's $20 towards your next Google product. Instead, in asking to escalate my complaint about the process, it was there I learned that Google U.S. does not really have a department that deals with such things. Information is there for India and London, but not for the U.S. I am not really sure why, as the customer, I should bear the brunt of the cost and inconvenience of a known defective product. Amazon makes returns so easy. When I asked the customer service rep why the need for additional funds to be held on my card when I have already paid for the product, he let me know that Google "doesn't trust customers to return the defective items". Good to know...This particular phone call (lasted over 1 hr 20 mins) ended with me waiting over 30 minutes for the rep to try and find an available supervisor to talk with me about my experience. The rep came back and told me he could not find one available and mumbled something about working from home. I explained to him that I hoped that almost 3 years into the working from home situation, Google had that sorted. Apparently, having a supervisor call me back was not really an option either (although, it was first proposed as a 1 hr call back, then 2-4 hours, then by 7 PM EST) because a supervisor would have to be found and have to agree to return the call. There are no phone numbers, names, email addresses, or physical addresses for complaints either. And Google does not trust me... ... show more

  • Newest does not mean better
I've had the original Nests literally since the first week they went on sale, and decided to replace them with the latest version. Bad mistake. The new version was twice as difficult to install and far, far harder to integrate with Alexa. The instructions, if I were a neophyte, would be useless. The display is laughably huge and looks like a cartoon version of its original self. The overall feel, manually using it, is of cheapness compared to the originals. The dial feels crude/heavy compared to the originals. I'm assuming they've cheapened the materials as it feels like a lower quality movement action. Having the ability to use an external sensor in another room was very appealing, but the install problems, severe Alexa issues and cheap feel made me return it. So disappointed ... ... show more

  • New Technology works great.
Recently upgraded our old digital thermostat and found this one a bit of a challenge. The issue was Nest 5 wires required versus the standard 4 provided with the old one I read all the installing guides and finally had to call my HVAC tech for help. Instead of running a 5th wire, he instructed me to move the existing green wire (fan) to the white common terminal on the furnace and Nest. By doing it myself I saved a service call charge. It works fine, just can't manually turn on the fan - which is OK and doesn't affect the the normal Heat/cool HVAC functions. Love the Nest learning feature as the system remembers and adjusts to our heating/cooling schedule automatically once a routine is established. Great system and was an easy learning curve. ... show more

  • Great Product — Read My Install To End!!
This replaced an old school existing thermostat that used two wires (had other wires tucked back and not hooked up at furnace) I hooked it up easily, but during programming it lost the pre charge and shut down. I called tech help. These guys are very nice, BUT, they are not electricians and are reading off a screen. Was told I had to charge it with a phone charger luckily my contractor had in his truck. We all have iPhones. Tech stayed on line for 10 minutes, After charged, we started again. AGAIN battery died. Tried to charge for 20 mins. Same thing, took it back to Lowe’s ** HAD TECH SEND EMAIL SAYING TO RETURN ** found out it was a Gen I. Ordered this Hen II here on Amazon. Same thing happened, they suggested a home install tech for$100. No way, we are talking two wires. I finally figured it out!!! *** Needed to hook up a THIRD existing wire at both furnace AND nest for POWER!!! The furnace was clicking and clicking, until the third wire was attached and circuits power was complete!! Why didn’t a tech know this??? LOVE IT — saves on the heating bill. ... show more

  • Easy to manage your home temperature
We bought this for our new home after moving cross country. We knew that our heating and cooling bills would be higher so getting a handle on things immediately upon moving in was a necessity. It was easy to install and we love being able to control things when we’re not even home. How many times have you left home for the day and then wished you had adjusted the thermostat so that the dust bunnies under your bed weren’t so toasty warm? No you can without driving back! ... show more

  • Nest learning thermostat
It takes about 2 to 3 weeks for the thermostat to "settle" in. I also ordered a remote temperature. This is because where the thermostat is located does not provide the best balance of temperature. Also, be very mindful of the wiring. Even though I took a photo of the wires I had to change since I have a heat pump and it would always kick in the aux heat until I changed the wires. ... show more
