Don't be fooled by influencers peddling this thing; it sucks and doesn't work;;Eyenigma;;;I have been using my Gnarbox 2.0 1 TB SSD now for several days, and I find it to be a uniquely valuable device to have in the field. If you read the description of the Gnarbox 2.0 you will see that in addition to being a very fast SSD drive it is also a computer that fits in the palm of your hand, runs off a long-lasting user replaceable Li battery, and is capable of transcoding and adding metadata to videos and photos. Modern high end cameras shoot very large video and raw photo files. It is easy in a full days shooting to fill up several CF, SD or other flash memory cards with these files. This necessitates the purchase of and transport of numerous CF and/or SD cards. The Gnarbox 2.0 SSD eliminates the need for numerous such cards as well as providing safe and secure storage in a rugged device. My workflow for a several day shoot with my Canon 5D Mark IV is to transfer the video and photo files to the Gnarbox 2 by attaching a fast USB C high speed card reader to the Gnarbox 2.0 and using the onboard menu settings on the Gnarbox 2 to backup the entire contents of the CF and SD cards. I then go into the Safekeep app on my iPhone or iPad to preview in full screen and full-frame rate playback and delete the videos that I do not want. I then move to the Selects app on the iPad or iPhone to create previews and rate the images on the Gnarbox 2. Then one needs only to tap on Sort by Rating in the Selects app and delete the unrated images from the Gnarbox SSD. At this point you have now organized and saved to the Gnarbox 2 all of the videos and photos that you wish to keep, and you can confidently delete them from the CF or SSD card freeing it up for another use. The Gnarbox 2.0 is incredibly fast. For example, I backed up over 50 GB of movies and still images to the Gnarbox 2 in under three minutes using a high speed USB C card reader attached to the Gnarbox. For previewing and selecting videos and images, I typically use a USB C connection between my iPad and the Gnarbox, although wireless is acceptable but not as fast. In the field I use LumaFusion with the Gnarbox 2.0 to do a rough edit of my video and still images and the Gnarbox 2.0 can be used either wirelessly or via a USB C connection to the iPad for this purpose. It is worth noting that with the Gnarbox connected via either mode to the iPad, browsing and previewing videos in LumaFusion stored on the Gnarbox is very very fast, and until one drags a clip/image into the LumaFusion timeline the file is not transferred from the Gnarbox 2 to the iPad's internal storage. This all makes for a fast and efficient workflow for the Gnarbox 2 with LumaFusion. Battery life of the Gnarbox 2.0 depends on the tasks that one is doing with the device. Transcoding can be slow and consumes a lot off energy. Fortunately, the M-JPEG files obtained with my Canon 5D Mark IV, while huge, are also largely uncompressed and do not require transcoding. For other files that might require transcoding for optimal playback on the iPad in LumaFusion or for preview in Safekeep, I would transcode these on a laptop/desktop computer to save time and battery life. Gnarbox claims 3-6 hours of battery life and I have found that to be quite accurate. It is also notable that the Gnarbox comes with a powerful charger capable of charging the Li battery to 100% in 2 hours. There is no doubt that for the workflow and purposes that I have described above in detail the Gnarbox 2.0 is a fine replacement for a laptop computer and far easier to take in the field than a computer. The Gnarbox hardware is excellent. The Gnarbox software (Safekeep and Selects) are adequate but could certainly use further development (which I understand is exactly what the Gnarbox team are currently working on). For example, at the moment, video can be previewed in full screen mode and real time in the Safekeep app, but to do this for images one must move to the Selects app, create image previews, rate the images, sort by rating, and then delete those not wanted. It would be far more efficient if all of this could be done in one app. Finally, I want to comment on Gnarbox Customer Support. In a word, it is excellent!!! Late Saturday afternoon I wrote Customer Support with a question and issue. I had a reply back by Sunday morning, and this was followed by further exchanges throughout the weekend all of which proved very helpful to me in understanding how to adapt the software to my workflow. I have rarely experienced the quality of customer support that I received from Gnarbox. I highly recommend this product to photographers and videographers who spend a lot of time in the field and are looking for a very fast, very portable backup and editing solution.;;Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2019;;5.0 out of 5 stars;;Gnarbox 2.0 SSD Is A Blazingly Fast Backup Device;;Thomas N. I highly recommend this product to photographers and videographers who spend a lot of time in the field and are looking for a very fast, very portable backup and editing solution.

Updating this review
Original review (one star): Initially wouldn't boot straight out of the box. It just hangs when the progress bar gets about 3/4 of the way across the screen. Updated review: After some initial frustration with this not working I was finally able to get it to boot up. Took it on a trip with me and used it to backup my SD cards at the end of each day. Used the app to cull shots and for rating and adding keywords. Imported some photos into Lightroom on my phone for editing. Generally speaking works as expected. My only complaint at this point is that I wish I had gotten a larger hard drive (I purchased the 256). I was only away for 7 days and I can see this filling up quick on longer trips.

Absolutely Remarkable!
What an amazing tool! If you're looking at the reviews here, most likely you've already done your research to understand what this device can bring to the table regarding your workflow. The backup function alone is worth the money, let alone the advanced file management across "any" SSD storage device attached to it while editing. Since discovering LumaFusion, and furthermore the advances that iPadOS13 brings to the table for the basic 7th Gen device, I opted for the 256GB version and added a Samsung T7 1TB SSD as a companion. I can now edit ProRes files easier on the iPad than I can on my i7 Hackintosh Beast!

Olympus raw files not supported
Worked fine when I first got it and was using an Olympus EM1 mkII, but I upgraded to Olympus EM1X. Gnarbox does not support the raw files from Olympus EM1X. One of the reasons that I purchased it was the partnership with Photo Mechanic, which I have been using for many years and supports all my cameras. But for some reason Gnarbox is not supporting any of the newer Olympus cameras. So now my Gnarbox is just an expensive external drive.

Great drive should include usb-C to usb-A Adapter
First I want to say that it doesn’t include a usb-C to usb-A adapter so if you don’t have usb-c on your computer (like me and only reason I gave it 4 stars)make sure to pick up a adapter besides that it’s a amazing drive it’s fast and easy to back up your SD cards and keeps your stuff safe with great battery life

Great, but can improve.
It’s awesome but connecting to it via the apps leaves a bit to be desired. Also the battery drains quite a bit quicker than advertised. Don’t work from it unless you’re plugged into power. Power it down between transfers.
