  • decent starter electric violin
Color: Rockstar Red
So over all this is a great electric violin. I use it at nights when my family has gone to sleep. Its still a bit loud when playing, Thought it might be crazy silent and just use the headphones..but I found putting a muter on the bridge makes it inpreceevable. As long as I have the headphones pluged in I'm good..ONLY BAD thing is there is NO power off switch, which means my 9v will drain after 2 days. even if its unplugged and all the knobs are turned down. So I'll prob add a switch or buy some rechargable 9v. ... show more

  • You won't give Isaac Stern a run for his money on this, but you'll save lots of money instead
Color: Jet Black
I bought this item after having tried a $60 model (I know) with a fingerboard that wasn't even on straight. I wanted a "silent" instrument for practice that would be quieter than a muted acoustic to save my hearing and my sanity, since I am new to the violin (am conservatory-trained pianist). I opted to skip the Cecilio-range violins ($140 or so) because they seem to have similar construction issues and went straight to the Bunnel. The craftsmanship is solid on this violin--everything is aligned, the wood feels like wood (you'd be amazed what passes for "wood"), everything plays as it should. It is heavier than an acoustic for sure even without a battery. Kennedy strings the violin and even rosins up the bow for you so it truly is ready to play straight out of the box. I have snapped strings in hot weather before, so I would wait a day or two before tuning the strings up all the way, especially the E string. The bow is quite nice and is probably the best part of this outfit. The case is light (hygrometer a nice plus) and will do just fine if you are not traveling worldwide or a zillion times a day. You should change the strings (and even the bridge) to whatever suits your fancy the best, and that will be true no matter what instrument you buy. I repeat, this will be true no matter what instrument you buy. You may want a more slanted bridge if you are an absolute beginner; this one is quite flat and will challenge your bowing skills. Honestly, I am not fond of the Prelude strings but I am a hopeless snob. I would NOT invest in Evah Pirazzi strings for this, but Alphayue strings are $20 or so for a set and have been getting rave reviews for their sound. The sound level is comparable to, not quieter than, a muted acoustic. I put a rubber mute on it and that makes me a very happy camper. The amp--I don't see why I would use it. Either invest in a bigger amp or just use headphones. Personally, I think it plays loud enough not to need headphones. It won't disturb your neighbors, but it might disturb you, lol! Am a classical music professional, just so you know. This is my second purchase from Kennedy Violins, and they do seem to go out of their way to make you happy. The shipping carton has a seal on it so you know if anything might be damaged in transit. They have support hotlines for every conceivable issue, so I feel like they have my back should something go wrong. But nothing has... ... show more

  • Don't Expect Too Much!
Color: Rockstar Red
The violin itself is basic, minimally decent. The company seems very nice, and the packaging was beautiful and the case superb. There's a lot to like, and if it was truly inexpensive, it would be fine. But the money you pay for this can be better put toward something really good. The primary reason for the mediocre review is that the accessories are extremely basic. You would need to have your own amplifier and headphones. While this was to be somewhat expected, and I do have a great Fender Amp and other headphones which work fine with this violin. I thought to myself, if the violin itself sounds nice on my own amp I'll keep it. This is where the performance of the violin itself is adequate and probably "good for the price." Keep in mind, though, that this price is not dirt cheap and for $300 you could get a Knilling or Silverwood violin of relatively superb quality. First the good. The instrument, while obviously basic and Chinese, is well made, great pegs, beautifully finished, stays in tune. It works beautifully with any professional amplifier. The bad is simply that for this mid-range price, you would expect at least a "B" sound. At best this violin is a "C" very basic, mediocre. Incidentally, its pretty loud without amplification which negates any benefit for near-silent practice. Its made of nice solid maple which resonates enough to produce a tinny but loud sound. Plugged in its okay. All in all, its at an awkward pricing point. If you want dirt cheap and still functional, probably go with the Cecilio version of this type of violin. If you are at all serious about the violin, it would pay to go for the mid-priced Yamaha. Maybe double the price but quadruple the quality! This is not quite junk, but not quite serious either. A very odd and puzzling purchase, which I ended up returning. That part was effortless! The company seems so nice and well intentioned. The product just isn't quite worth the money. Go dirt-cheap or go big, for the Yamaha! No use dabbling in the middle ground, paying decent money for marginal quality. ... show more
