  • Disappointing results. Constant disconnections. No difference in connection speed.
I bought this to try to improve connection speeds on an older laptop. Not only did I see no difference in connection speed, it also started having a disconnect/reconnect issue that required me to unplug and replug in the USB for it to work. Thinking it might be my older laptop, I connected it to my 6 mo old laptop and then a PC with wifi card. The same issues were happening with those 2 computers as well-and proximity to the router didn't matter since the PC is where the router is, and the new laptop is in the same room as the PC and router. (Both the laptops installed wifi capabilities were turned off prior to connecting the DLink AC 1900 in case you wondered) I contacted the vendor and they sent me an update to use on all the computers. The update fixed the full disconnect which requires you to unplug and replug in the usb to get it connected again, but the product still randomly disconnects and reconnects itself. It can't be proximity to the router as the issue: it happens close to or far away from the router. It can't be due to the age of the laptops-the other laptop was new. It can't be due to the laptop vs PC, since the pc also had the issue if using the WiFi card/WLAN instead of the LAN If you are trying to submit something online, doing schoolwork through an online school site, or anything online that resets a page you fill out if the connection is interrupted, you would find everything cleared because you don't have an internet connection. I contacted them multiple times and eventually they said to contact a certain tech support person. Its hard for me to equate spending $70+ on an item that constantly disconnects and reconnects. I will be sending it back for a refund and going back to my laptops connection. ... show more

  • Don't hesitate, just purchase it.
First thing I have to say, this purchase was completely worth it. I bought this for about $77 and was about to purchase it from Amazon for a $99. I had an older model D-link system wireless USB AC adapter that had an expired Windows certificate and kept disconnecting. I was hesitant on buying the item originally due to the high price tag and glad I did. In terms of connection speed, it's a solid connection, has not disconnected even when having multiple downloads, HD streams and transfers going on back to back on both 2.4/ 5GHz. The router I purchased is wireless AC Asus model that has a 3 x 3 antenna design matching this model. They pair up perfectly, they also released the firmware for Windows 10 in the Dlink system support page. After downloading and installing, it connected perfectly with no problems and has been running a month, if not longer without any issues. Everything is snappy. My internet provider speed runs 100 down and 26 up however I do "feel" the difference when loading webpage and HD streams, it's a noticeable upgrade from my previous AC adaptor. The blue light emitted by the unit is not overly bright, but you can easily see when issues arise. It goes from orange when connecting or connection is lost to blue as active, (off) when no power if going thru it or computer can't see the unit. PROS: Solid connection, not overly flashy design, easy to troubleshoot based off color emitted. Smaller than a baseball. Wireless AC 3 x 3 antenna design. CONS: None, but if I had to be picky, I would say price might scare people off. (I will also upload an image with the connection speed later on. Along with a size comparison image) Tip, make sure you have wireless AC router that has 3 x 3 antenna design or more to match the unit. That way you can get the speed advertised and decent internet provider speeds. Make sure unit is plugged into USB 2.0 or 3.0 to get the higher transfer speeds. Mine is plugged into an old non USB 3.0 (using 2.0) and my speed is 1.3GPS - which is extremely good! ... show more

  • Ok, not perfect, for Windows-only users
I had a mixed experience with this. In Windows 10, connection speeds were extremely fast, as advertised. But the connection was unusually slow/unreliable to establish at Windows start-up, and the connection periodically dropped. In Linux (Ubuntu), driver support is wholly non-existent. The only way to get it working is to force installation of drivers for a different device with the same family chipset, and the resulting connection is unusably slow (as in, under 56k). D-Link does not advertise Linux support, so this isn't a case of being mislead, but I do think the lack of support counts somewhat against the product. I ultimately went back to my old, dirt cheap PCI wi-fi adapter, which offers reliable drop-free connections in both Windows and Linux ... show more

  • Wireless access at FULL service speed!
I don't usually bother to leave reviews, but I have to defend this adapter! I have an ASUS AC1900 router with 100Mbps (download) service and a horrible room with no wired access, which is, of course, the one room where the majority of devices will be used. I tried powerline adapters, range extenders and assorted usb adapters but could only get to 30Mbps max wireless speeds until I found this adapter. I'm using two, one on a Win7 desktop and one on a Win10 laptop - both consistently reach 100Mbps (which I check obsessively). I'm certain it's the D-Link enabling these speeds because the laptop is positioned in an area of the room that had been completely dead to any wireless signal at all with my other configurations! The older reviews were probably based on previous versions, but if you purchased this within the last six months and aren't thrilled with your wireless speeds, it's likely you're blaming the wrong component of your network. Wireless adapters can only provide up to the fastest speed you're paying for, the fastest speed your cable modem can receive, the fastest speed and strongest signal your router can transmit, and the fastest speed your device can process. Make sure your ENTIRE configuration is up to speed! ... show more
