  • Fantastic Entry Level GPS Drone - let's break it down!
Style: F22 Gen 1
These days I only write reviews for products that I really like or really hate. Thankfully this review is about really, really liking the F22 drone. I purchased it mainly for the follow me function while mountain biking as well as an interesting selfie camera. I did not expect too much because of the price point (which is about 1/3 the cost of the nearest competitor with the same features) but figured that if it did half of what it says it can do I would be happy. So far I have tested all of the capabilities except waypoint navigation and I was very impressed, here is a breakdown: GPS GUIDENCE: Getting the drone connected to your phone through wifi and then connecting to satellites is a bit cumbersome but after a few times it became fairly quick and easy. Usually takes me about 2-3 minutes for the phone wifi to connect and then another minute for satellites to connect. Once that is accomplished (FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS) you are ready to fly. The drone will idle with props turning until you take off then it will hold a steady position until you tell it to do something else. ORBIT: I found this mode to be the most useful and most fun. Setting the distance and altitude takes about 5 seconds and the drone will fly in a circle (however large you set it) while keeping the camera trained on the center. Super cool for selfies or group photos and videos. FOLLOW ME: Mixed results. It will follow you but from what I can tell the drone needs to be fairly high in the air and wind will impact how well it keeps the camera trained on you. I was hoping to keep the drone close to me (about 20 feet away and 10 feet high) but it had trouble following me accurately. I am guessing that when it is higher it is much easier to follow an object because there is less flight adjustment TRACKING: This is the second most useful mode. It works wonderfully. After you have the drone in the air you can draw a square around the object you want to track and the drone will stay in a stationary position while keeping the camera pointed at whatever you drew a square around. Super cool and works beautifully. HEADLESS: If you want to fly the drone around and you are like me and have a nasty habit of crashing into things you want to enable the one touch Headless mode. That will make the drone go in whatever direction you move the joystick REGARDLESS OF WHICH WAY THE DRONE IS POINTING. It’s the only way to fly and just have fun. TAKE OFF / LANDING: This feature works perfectly although landing takes quite a while to get the drone on the ground. RETURN TO HOME: This enables the drone to automatically return to the place from which it took off. Works great to get the drone back to the general area but it takes forever for it to actually land. I usually hit the return button, let it get close then bring it down manually and hover it so that I can grab it and then hit the emergency stop and all props stop. CAMERA: I was impressed with the picture and video quality, again maybe because I wasn’t expecting much. It is a fisheye lens and is on a gimbal that you can move remotely up and down. You also get a real-time image of what the drone sees on your phone, which is really nice for framing shots. CAUTIONARY NOTE: Do not land or take off on sand. The sand gets into the motors instantly and will destroy them. Also be very careful not to crash the drone on its camera, which is very easy to scratch or break. Picture / Video: Super impressed with the video quality but then again I wasn’t expecting much. It will take pictures and video directly to your phone, which is awesome. At the same time it will save the same pictures and videos on to a micro SD card. I found that the media recorded directly to the SD card is of much higher quality than the same media recorded to the phone. GEEKS ONLY: The pictures recorded to the phone and SD card are jpg files and the SD card versions are about twice the size as the phone versions. The video however is saved on the phone as an mp4 file while on the SD card they are avi files. Again the files on the SD card are bigger and of higher quality. Conclusion: This is a relatively inexpensive drone that has all the capabilities of more expensive models and is a great way to get into drone photography and flight. After some familiarization it is fairly easy to use and the advanced features of the drone are also easy to initiate after you have played with it for a while. This drone delivered on every promise made and I could not be happier with this purchase. UPDATE: I finally figured out how to activate the follow me mode (or at least I think I did). You must first activate the tracking mode (which keeps the camera pointed at you ), THEN activate the follow me mode. I am guessing both need to be active so the tracking points the camera while the follow me mode follows the controller. ... show more

  • Good little quad overall
Style: F22 Gen 1
The media could not be loaded. Got this on a whim, have wanted a little more advanced quad that the ones we have currently. We currently have a few minis, a Syma X5C-1, and a UDI U818A but those are more toys than real quads. Haven't used them in a while because they need near perfect flying conditions outside. While the F22 may also be considered a toy it is a step up from the others we have. We were looking for one that didn't need "perfect" weather to fly in. First try using it was not the best, but we charged the battery back up and my younger son took it for another try. He had much better success the second go. Today was use #3, and we have some video/pics to share. Here is our review after a third use: Initial use - 3 stars - initially it was a little cumbersome to setup. Instructions on the phone are a little hard to follow as you're setting it up. There is the instruction booklet with it but that is also not the clearest. It gets a little better with use, our third try was definitely a good outing. Controls/controller - 4 stars - The controller is a little small but it handles the job of allowing control of the quad pretty nicely. However, I have an iPhone 8 with an Otterbox case and I could not put my phone in the holder. My son's phone (an SE?) fits well and I have an older 6 with no case that fits ok-ish. Just something to think about. After a few minutes of use my son had it down pretty well. Flying - 5 stars - this thing flies well. It turns nicely, flies in a straight line if you calibrate it properly. It has pretty good speed. Extra features - 5 stars - I know these may be normal on most quads now but the extra features on the F-22 are worth 5 stars. The flight limits, which limit altitude, distance from controller, etc. are great. The video I attached (unfortunately I can only attach one) shows the quad hitting the "wall" before we figured that setting out. Where is "backs up" is where it hit the range limit and actually came back to where we were. We have lost quads before because of it flying out of range so this is a great feature for us. Had a little trouble getting the follow me to work properly but that may have been our fault so I can't mark off for that yet. The routing feature was pretty cool, seemed to follow the route we laid out although it was not a complicated one. Camera - 3 stars - the camera takes a decent pic/video but as you can see it is not the greatest. Good enough for us but it does get pixelated at times. Maybe it is how we are recording but overall I have to give the camera feature just a 3. Battery - 4 stars - definitely gets about 15 minutes worth of use, would have liked to have seen just a little more time. Going to get an extra battery to give us a half hour total time. So, let's add it up - 3+4+5+5+3+4=24/6 categories = Overall - 4 stars - a fun little quad, a solid 4 star rating for it. I would recommend buying it (especially if you can get it for $125 or less like we did). An extra battery seems to be essential as the flight time is about 15 minutes so 2 would give you 30 mins total. You don't want to push it more than that, however, these little motors on these things can't handle extended periods of time running full bore. I may get another one so we can try racing them. ... show more

  • Easy & Enjoyable, Recommended!
Style: F22 Gen 1
When I received the drone, I was really impressed with its size! When folded, it fits in the palm of my hand. I have had small frame drones before and usually within a few weeks their limited range and reliability became more of a burden. But since my first flight with my Contixo F22 I have been a major fan. Here is my breakdown: Travel case - This was included in my purchase, and made transporting the drone simple. No worries about bending the props or landing feet. It has storage for the drone, remote, 3 batteries and a zipper section for cables and papers. Packed up, it is about the size of a school lunch box. Manual - The instruction booklet was easy to understand and outlined the important details. I kept it packed with the drone and found myself referring back to it several times to make sure I understood how each function worked. Drone - Great size for beginners to experienced users. It is easy to unfold and be ready to fly in just a few movements. Unfold the arms, press the power button, and you are ready! Has micro Sd slot for inflight recording and pictures if you are not using the app to do so. The folding blades are a lifesaver. It recovers well if you happen to run into something or clip a tree limb. I accidentally ran into a radio tower and it bounced off and only fell about 10 feet and recovered on its own. The blades are easy to replace just in case. Control - Compact and foldable as well. Unfolds to a comfortable size and has a spring-loaded mount to hold your phone when using the app. Buttons are marked and easy to understand. Camera controls allow you to tilt the camera straight down or straight ahead, or anywhere in-between. App - Many features, you can access the auto features from the flight screen. Also has a flight log which will record your flight height and distance. I enjoyed being able to see how high I was actually flying. Also available are the pictures and videos that you record during flight through the app. My favorite was the GPS flight screen, which allows you to see your current area via a satellite picture. It draws a circle on that screen showing you the available flight area to which you can assign waypoints and send the drone on an "unmanned flight". You can adjust the size of the circle in the settings. Ie: you can limit how high and how far the drone is allowed to go. This feature was great when I was learning how to use the GPS flight feature. Flight time - This varied depending on current wind conditions and use. On a calm day, I could get 15 minutes or so, on an EXTREMELY windy day, I only got about 8. (That being said, the little drone did a really good job in trying to stay stationary, but I would suggest not flying in really windy conditions. You risk having a gust push it into a tree, etc.) Camera - I attached a few pictures from the unit. While the F20 has a better camera, this one isn't bad at all. I suggest slow and steady movements for video recording and calm winds for picture taking. Overall I have been extremely satisfied with my purchase and would suggest it to others. I went ahead and purchased 2 extra batteries for my unit and I try to fly it daily. Their customer support department has been great as well. Answered my emails within 24 hours, an extreme plus! Extremely satisfied with my purchase. ... show more

  • My First Drone (F22) - Extremely Happy
Style: F22 Gen 1
I purchased the folding model (F22). This is my first drone so I don’t have much to compare it to. I was initially looking for a drone with three specific features: 1) Cheap – I don’t want to be afraid to use it. I also don’t want to feel bad about buying it if I never have time to use it. 2) Small – It has to easily fit into my big fanny pack or backpack. Otherwise, I will never bring it anywhere with me. 3) Light – I hate having a lot of weight on me when I hike. This drone met all three of these criteria. As I continued reading reviews and watching YouTube videos, I added three more criteria: 1) Good Camera – Most of the drones with 1080p cameras have horrible video quality. This one was the best that I could find. 2) Adjustable camera – How do you get the shots that you want if the camera is always pointing in the same direction, you can’t. The camera on this drone can move up and down. 3) SD Card – Many of the cheap drones record video on you phone, through the WiFi connection. Any lag or interference causes shuddering in the video. I just couldn’t have that. This drone has an SD card so the video is perfect. The video that was recorded to my phone with this drone was also actually perfect. There was no stuttering, but I don’t want to take chances. Setup was pretty easy, just watch videos and read the instructions. I’ve flown for about an hour now and I’m being very cautious. I was flying in an area with weak GPS coverage (even my Garmin was having issues) and the return to home was still pretty accurate. Follow object mode worked well. Follow me seemed to work pretty well, but my phone was having some issues getting a GPS signal, which isn’t the drones fault. The only issues that I’ve had so far are: 1) Beeping remote – When I record video using the button on the remote, the remote beeps constantly to let you know that you are recording. It’s annoying to me. Use the APP so that you don’t have to hear the beeping. 2) SD Card – My SD card was pre-formatted with exfat. The drone seems to have problems with exfat. All of my videos were corrupt and could not be extracted after my first flight. I reformatted the card using fat32 and everything is fine now. It’s a 64Gig card and Windows will not format a fat32 partition over 32Gig, so I just created a 32Gig partition. I’ll be able to get about 9 hours of video on the card. Good enough for me. 3) I did have one small crash on my last flight when I was landing. I don’t know why. Everything is working fine. I don’t know if it was me or the drone or bad GPS coverage or maybe a gust of wind. It was probably me. All in all, I like this drone and I plan to keep it in my big fanny pack when I hike, mountain climb, or rock climb. I may even buy an extra one at some point for my wife or son to play with so that they don’t mess with mine. They are cheap enough and easy enough to fly. I hope that this review helps someone else out in making their decision. ... show more

  • Great beginner Drone!
Style: F22 Gen 1
The good! The Contixo F22 RC Foldable Quadcopter Drone is a great little drone. I have never flown any other drone so I have nothing to compare it to, but I found the F22 easy to fly. While the camera has a somewhat fisheye lens, it takes good pictures and video. The “return home button” works as advertised, plus the other special features, orbiting, follow me, etc all worked for me. The battery has decent flight time and the drone can really travel a considerable distance. The pictures and videos are stored on a SD card and can be downloaded on to a laptop for editing. You can’t beat this drone for the price! It is nice and portable, come with a great case that holds the drone, controller and extra batteries, etc.. The bad! I had some questions about my drone and tried to contact and work with the seller, Contixo, but they were impossible to work with. They never once answered a email, and never returned a phone call. Whenever I was able to “catch” someone on the phone, they were friendly and helpful, but only one employee (Darlene) ever followed through on anything they promised to do! All the other employees I contacted made promises, but never followed through! The unbelievable! While the drone is easy to fly it is not idiot proof! While flying the drone I lost sight of it, and the video picture on my controller (my iPhone) froze. I hit the “Land” instead of the “return to home” button by mistake! The drone made a nice safe landing out of sight, and as advertised the controlling software contained a map which led me right to the spot the drone landed. Unfortunately, it had landed in a nearby golf course pond! Also, please note, this drone does not float! The unbelievable part, after several scouting trips I recovered the drone from the pond four weeks to the day after it land. The drone had been submerged for all that time. It was covered in marine growth and fully water logged. After cleaning, drying and replacing the battery I was able to get it flying again! Now I admit that it flys poorly and the camera doesn’t work, but it does fly! Who knows, if it had been recovered from the pond right after it went in, it may have been ok. I liked this drone enough to spring for a refurbished one and thanks to Darlene at Contixo I was able to get one. ... show more

  • DO NOT BUY THIS DRONE! Developed it's own consciousness and flew away.
Style: Quadcopter
My first flight of the drone went ok. It had a fairly big issue where even the slightest gust of wind would knock it around in the air but that was to be expected considering the cheaper price point. Later on, I took it for a second flight on a nice still day and tried to do a bit of video capture with it. The problem is the camera was genuinely awful. It very well may have been an "HD" camera but any actual recorded footage looked like it was at best in 144p and would many times just freeze for several seconds at a time. This was a bit of a disappointment considering I was looking forward to using it for a shot or two in a short film, but ultimately this disappointment was still something I could live with. To be truthful it wasn't until the third flight that I decided to write a review of this horrible product. See after the first flight I decided that I would try to look for incredibly still evenings to fly the thing. Because of the dependency on a particular kind of weather it took a while for the perfect night to come around. Now we come to last night. After a bit of contemplation, I decided (foolishly) that that night contained absolutely perfect weather to fly the thing, and it was! To be truthful, I was getting quite excited to fly the drone as once again everything seemed perfect. So, after spending a few minutes to set everything up as well as I could, I took flight. That's when things began to go awry. I had it lift off the ground, and within a moment as if following in the footsteps of johnny 5 before it, it started to seemingly fly in any which direction without me having any control over it. After a few critical seconds of confusion, I turned off its propellors and let it fall from the air (at this point about 15 feet up). After several moments of troubleshooting and reading the manual then watching and rewatching the instructional video I was still left dumbfounded and answerless. And so, in my infinite wisdom, I thought I would try again. This time the same thing happened and it flew into a building that was about 100 feet away. Frustrated I tried once more and rather than flying into the building, it auto-piloted its self into a nearby tree. My anger continued to climb but alas I tried to keep myself calm as I thought that this time I would make an attempt to be more patient with it. So, after carefully resetting everything I could I set it back down and tried one last fatal time. This time the drone flew up into the air about a hundred feet and flew straight towards the east where it led its self into a nearby cornfield without me telling it to do anything besides lift off. I spent the next few minutes attempting to chase after it and bring it back to the ground. Once more it rejected my orders for a good while until all of a sudden it fell out of the sky into the cornfield. I spent the next hour in the now nighttime darkness using my phone's flashlight trying to find it amidst the corn. But nothing surfaced. Then this morning I searched once more with a bit of help from family for another few constant hours but sadly, nothing ever came of it. The drone was lost and I was downtrodden, hopeless. As the return policy had expired a mere few weeks before this we were left with all the spare components (the controller, the case, the manual, the spare battery, etc) but no drone to show for any of it. I know for a fact that I'm not the only one who has had this issue considering some similar stories have surfaced in fellow reviews. But none the less I feel left with no consolidation for my troubles. Honestly, I really don't want another of these abominations, I'd rather some sort of a refund on my purchase even if just partial. Truthfully though, I don't think such a thing will come to pass. TL;DR - Drone was flawed but decent enough until it just flew away without my control. I am now very very sad. ... show more
