With one homemade Venturi burner, im easily able to produce enough heat for bladesmithing. I've had success with. Mokume and some small forge welding. Haven't tried Damascus yet. Works better than expected! So far 1" of this material is working just as good if not better than many of the fire bricks I've used in the past, in regards to heat retention and space consumption. And unlike fire bricks this insulation doesn't crack (in this case, tear) and need replacement after much use. Its lightweight and flexible nature also makes it much easier to install than fire bricks and reduces hassle. So far 1" of this material has withstood above copper melting temperatures (2,000°F, 1,100°C) in my small foundry multiple times and hasn't shown any sign a wear, although at these temperatures heat loss is only slightly noticeable so I certainly recommend using 2" for temps this high. I definitely plan to use this insulation in the future for other high temp projects.

The small exterior sheathing part of a 'Tee' on my high temperature stainless steel chimney separated and the insulation had broken down and poured out. When I realized NFPA codes required me to replace the entire chimney since the manufacturer was out of business and I couldn't just replace the 'Tee' with a different brand, I decided I would at least try to replace the insulation and repair the loose exterior part of the 'Tee'. After repair, I tested the part with an increasingly hot 3 day fire. The repaired part was cool to the touch while my existing pipe was warm to the touch, even after activating the catalytic combustor which reached 1400 degrees, I was impressed. This is the real deal, high-quality brand-name ceramic insulation, 1" thick. Exactly what you need when dealing with the really hot stuff! CM Ceramics is an established supplier of industrial materials with a long track record of quality materials and service. Other offerings appear to be "cheaper" because they are! You will find them to be either generic imported knock-off materials or 1/2" thickness. The 1/2" thickness is 1/2 the material, so naturally, you will find it at half the price. While the knock-off materials may say 1" thick, you will find that they don't have the same density and material qualities. You save nothing because the other offerings won't do the job.

Great Solution.
If you need an effective blanket, this is great. I installed a pellet stove in my shop. Since the inner/outer walls were steel, I created a cavity in the regular insulation and wound a good 3 layers around the vent pipe. The blanket is not "tough", hence it will tear apart if you muscle it too much. It's made to be gently cut and placed. There's probably more uses for this product than I can think of, but for my project, it was perfect.

By far the best flame shield for soldering copper pipes. All the other flame shields melt when in direct contact with flame. This one you can surround the pipe with it and direct contact with the flame does nothing to it. I even used it to solder right up against PVC and the PVC remained untouched. I love it!

While the knock-off materials may say 1" thick, you will find that they don't have the same density and material qualities. You save nothing because the other offerings won't do the job.

Great Solution.
If you need an effective blanket, this is great. I installed a pellet stove in my shop. Since the inner/outer walls were steel, I created a cavity in the regular insulation and wound a good 3 layers around the vent pipe. The blanket is not "tough", hence it will tear apart if you muscle it too much. It's made to be gently cut and placed. There's probably more uses for this product than I can think of, but for my project, it was perfect.

By far the best flame shield for soldering copper pipes.
By far the best flame shield for soldering copper pipes. All the other flame shields melt when in direct contact with flame. This one you can surround the pipe with it and direct contact with the flame does nothing to it. I even used it to solder right up against PVC and the PVC remained untouched. I love it!
