  • Best bang for the buck for DSLR video
Style: EF-S 18 mm - 55 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS MK II Pattern: Single
Please note: this review is for shooting video with this lens only. I've been shooting DSLR video on my Canon 7D for a little over a year now, and really love the quality of the footage from the camera. One thing that is always tough to do with DSLR video though is shoot handheld without getting shake or jitter in your shots. I initially purchased 2 high end zoom lenses (the 24-70L 2.8 and the 70-200L 2.8) and could get nice shots, but handheld footage was always unusable without a camera rig. Well my friend had this little kit lens on a road trip, and I decided to try it and see how the IS (image stabilization) feature worked when shooting video. Wow, what a difference! All the handheld shots I couldn't get before were now possible. We filmed a little documentary and this lens was used 90% of the time without a camera rig. The difference in quality between this and the L lenses for video was hard for me to see, and sometimes I couldn't tell the difference. The L lenses are definitely better in low light and more robust, but they are also heavier too. So having this little tiny lens on the camera made handheld shots a pleasure to shoot. The focus ring is a little flimsy, but once I got used to it, was not so bad. After we got back from the trip, I looked the lens up on Amazon and got a used one for under $100! (I paid over $1000 for each L lens...crazy!) This lens is by FAR the best bang for the buck when shooting DSLR video. For stills, I still stick with my L zooms. Thinking of upgrading to the 2.8 IS zoom in the future to get better low light performance and better build construction. But for now this is a great lens for handheld video work. ... show more

  • Just as promised
Style: EF-S 18 mm - 55 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS MK II Pattern: Single
I needed this lens so I could take wider angle photos with my canon 30D. My 30D came with a different lens, 28mm-155mm - I researched this online for about a week, and this is the standard all-purpose lens that usually comes with their cameras. I believe I paid $129 for it here - was $199 at other retail outlets - however, none had in stock anyway, so I'd have to wait for it to be delivered. I did not use th express shipping - just whatever was standard. Ordered it on Thursday afternoon and it arrived Monday morning - very quick. Looks brand new - works perfectly. Exactly what I wanted. I saw that sometimes it goes on sale at Amazon for $99, but I couldn't wait - I needed it and $129 was just fine. Better than ordering it at a retail outlet for $199 and having to wait. ... show more

  • Decent replacement for kit lens.
Style: EF-S 18 mm - 55 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS MK II Pattern: Single
When I got my Canon T1i it came with this lens. I had it for several years until my tripod mount broke and the camera bounced across the room from 7 feet in the air. The bayonet mount on the back of the lens pops off rather easily when the lens and camera free fall from a great height. Good lens, fast focus, decent aperture size. Just don't drop it from over your head. ... show more

  • Good Lens To Start With
Style: EF-S 18 mm - 55 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS MK II Pattern: Single
I bought this lens around the same time that I bought my Canon 60D body. I needed a cheap telephoto lens to accompany my 50mm f/1.8 prime lens when shooting around town. Like any other kit lens, it is going to have an ok build and image quality. I like how they added IS to the kit lens now. (don't remember when they started doing that) Image Stabilization on the lens has been helpful for photography AND video, video being something I am really interested in using the 60D for. I am rating this item four out of five stars because it is a great telephoto lens *for the price*. If you are looking for some amazing glass, don't look here. ... show more

  • Replacement and working
Style: EF-S 18 mm - 55 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS MK II Pattern: Single
I bought this as a replacement for the version before it. I got the original with my Canon Rebel XSi (450D). The motor on that went. It would only turn the focus ring in one direction. That happened twice again. That's right. I have two lenses of the previous version of this lens with faulty motors. They lasted roughly a year and a half each. I think it might be because of people trying to turn the focus ring when the lens was set to auto-focus. I bought this version about 6 months ago. No problems yet. It is mostly identical to its predecessor with some tiny cosmetic changes. I haven't really noticed a performance difference between the two versions. I'm just hoping the motor will last a couple of years. It's a good price for decent quality so I'd recommend it if you want this focal length on the cheap. ... show more

  • Super All-Around Lens
Style: EF-S 18 mm - 55 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS MK II Pattern: Single
I had to replace my previous Canon 18-55 lens after an careless and unfortunate incident involving root beer. This lens works great. I love using the 18-55 as my go-to everyday lens because of its flexibility. It will do snap-and-shoot, landscapes, portraits, macros, etc. It's an all-around work-horse. At the same time, it's pretty small, keeping your camera size manageable, especially when you're on the go but still want quality photographs. ... show more

  • Starter lens, Fast shipping
Style: EF-S 18 mm - 55 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS MK II Pattern: Single
Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. This lens is very light and plastic! That being said its meant for starters. The aperture is okay in this and the sharpness is what you would expect. I used it for about 2 months before upgrading to a fixed aperture zoom lens with wider capabilities. If you are still learning about how to shoot in manual and learning your camera this is the way to learn how important your lenses are! ... show more
