abunda_amazon_reviews After a fair while looking around at smokers, and with my old second-hand gas grill showing its age, I decided my best bet was to go with a pellet grill that could do both jobs — grill and smoker — AND wouldn't make me refill gas bottles all the time. After looking around at many reviews and best-of lists, I settled on the Camp Chef. Why Camp Chef? Because there's a couple of makers who are offering pellet grills with the quality and features of long-established top brands at nearly twice the price, and Camp Chef is one of them. In addition, because I want to be able to smoke fish to make my own finnan haddies, I needed a grill that could hold a consistent 160°F temperature. There aren't many grills that can do that, and several of the biggest names in the business can't. Camp Chef can and does. Why this specific Camp Chef model? A folding second shelf on the front, more smoking area, a pellet hopper sight-glass and dump chute, and a stainless steel lid. (...OK, I really like the bronze finish model as well, but the PG24 isn't available in bronze with this set of features ... yet.) Mine arrived with some shipping damage. The side shelf was bent, and one of the cooking grilles fell out of the packaging during unpacking and got damaged. Camp Chef is replacing both under warranty without any hesitation. It was straightforward to assemble, with no additional tools needed except a large Philips screwdriver. (You'll need a couple of Allen keys; they are provided.) There is not a sheet-metal screw to be seen on this grill; everything is riveted, welded, or if it bolts on, the bolts go into swaged-in thread inserts. This is a quality piece of kit. And it's solid, too, good heavy gauge metal everywhere, this wasn't banged together out of old cookie sheets like some products on the market. Once you've unpacked everything that's shipped inside the grill, it'll take you thirty minutes to an hour to assemble it. Follow the first-use instructions in the manual to load it with pellets the first time, then to burn off excess manufacturing oil and fully cure the paint. (Half an hour at 350 degrees.) After that, you're ready to cook. Make sure you read the section on the shutdown cycle too. Remember that you need to be able to plug it in; its pellet feed and control panel need electrical power. Plan ahead. It would be a good move to install an outdoor GFCI wherever you plan to plug it in, unless you plan to just run an extension cord out a door. (I'm sure I shouldn't have to tell you that you shouldn't plan to use this grill indoors.) Also, don't expect to be able to run the pellets all the way down to the bottom of the sight glass. If the level of pellets in the hopper is below half the height of the sight glass, top it up. There will still be pellets visible in the sight glass when they're no longer reaching the feed auger. I expect I've a lot more to learn yet about using this grill. But it's looking good so far. Gotta run, I have a recipe for jerked baby back ribs to modify... UPDATE: Camp Chef replaced both the damaged side shelf, AND the grille that got damaged during unpacking. They offered me a free grill cover, but I declined since I'd already ordered one, so they tossed in a free set of Camp Chef stainless-steel barbecue tools instead. Which consists of a really SOLID spatula, a decently large spoon, a set of locking tongs, and a fairly decent santoku. Excellent customer service, Camp Chef. So far I've cooked three racks of jerked baby back ribs on the PG24MZG, a rack of lamb, and half a dozen wagyu burgers. All worked pretty well, though the lamb could have stood another ten degrees and I need to refine my burger technique a bit.;;August 5, 2019;;5.0 out of 5 stars;;Competes well with grills twice the price;;Phil Stracchino (Technical Thug);;;OK - not big on writing reviews, so here we go. Currently have a Weber charcoal, Weber Gas and Cook Shack electric Smoker. Sitting on porch at lake house, they said what they preferred in each brand. One liked price of Z Grill and since bought through farm store, he could write off on farm account. Second liked wifi on his Traeger, as he could fire up on way home from work and check temps while in house. Both had dislikes too - having to vacuum out ashes, need to use all pellets before adding new flavor, lack of direct heat option for steaks. Based on this feedback I selected the Camp Chief PG24MZG, as $100 higher than Z Grill and no wifi option, were not personal concerns. Only used once, but after running at 350 for 1/2 hour (recommend) temp maintained an acceptable range (maybe 5 stars if I'd used more). Assembly was a breeze and I feel anyone could complete without pulling out your hair. Minor scratches where lid rests on grill, but no dents. When assembling the hopper lid, I recommend placing the product catalog over the top of hopper grate, as screws fell into hopper and required a long magnet to retrieve. This grill is heavy and once assembled it takes two grown men and a boy to lift. Cooked a couple T-Bones, first smoking at 180 for 30 min pulling from grill, turning it up to 400 and then returning to grill to finished cook. Actually achieved a nice smoked flavor, but I'll admit I missed the charcoal flavor my Weber provides. Ordered pellets which blend charcoal and oak, so we'll see if this helps. Looking forward to trying a brisket, as hoping to get a nice smoke ring. Hope this helps.
