  • Font size is crucial for accuracy.
Color: Exam Reader
My 10 yo has a visual/neuro disability that interferes with reading ability. The c-pen exam is a simple, well designed tool for her to use in class rather than her needing constant oral administration from another individual. The voice is much more natural than anticipated and versus other audio devices we have used. The feature to repeat a sentence rather than having to rescan has been extremely useful to her, as well. Of course, her classmates thought it was the coolest thing ever. Thankfully, she doesn't feel like it makes her a target for teasing. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because the font-size reading capability is more limiting than I had hoped. As she promotes to higher grade levels, font size decreases and some "large print" options are almost too big for the reader. Not all, but some. I understand the pen is expected to have some limitations but I almost wonder if we just happen to be in the sweet spot of font sizes. Hopefully she will be able to use it for a few years before the font is to small for the pen to read accurately and without mixing words from other sentences. Overall, we truly are grateful for this pen. ... show more

  • Unreliable
Color: Exam Reader
This was easy to set up and worked well for a few days. I was demonstrating its use in my classroom when it suddenly switched to Norwegian. There is no way to reset it. I'm waiting for the battery to run down to see if I can start over with the set up in English.

  • Not exactly child friendly
Color: Exam Reader
This pen has good intentions but not user friendly for a child to use to help read independently. The main reason I was willing to pay so much money for this was to help my child with words they get stuck on to aid in independent reading. However, this pen has to be used just right. Slow and right in the middle of the pen to get the words correct. It ended up not serving the purpose we needed it for. I returned it as it was too much money to keep and hope for better results. ... show more

  • Great for students who struggle to read
Color: Exam Reader
This is the 3rd one I've bought for my students who struggle to read. They are able to use this in class and participate like their peers. The only problem is that it misreads words sometimes.

  • Great tool for special needs kid, just needs technology updated
Color: Exam Reader
my son is a 13 year old who cannot read. He is on the spectrum and understands a 4th grade level. This pen is a wonderful tool for him. It is a bit tricky to get it to work correctly and it would be better if it could have more of a human voice and stop at commas, periods, question marks etc. But our biggest issue is here lately, every time we turn it off it starts in a different language, both with reading and with text. It is only a few months old and that is so frustrating. Can anyone fix this? We have reset it, etc. ... show more

  • First Impressions - good tool for homework independence
Color: Exam Reader
Update: there is a downside. The device is easily confused. You have to practice holding and scanning to get the speed and accuracy you want. It does not work well with small type or any extraneous characters like underlines. It's kind of frustrating, so my kid will use it for simple, short worksheets for now. Basic, easy-to-use text reader. My 6th grader with profound dyslexia is using it for reading homework worksheet instructions to him. The voice speed and volume is adjustable. British or American accent. Pros: my kid think it "looks cool and high tech", which means he'll use it. Uses headphones or pen speaker. Lightweight, fits in kid's hand. No complicated functions. It's just a reader, not dictionary or recorder or other things on more sophisticated pens. -1 point because it takes some practice to scan, have to avoid things like underlines or symbols that can throw it off. It takes a bit of practice. ... show more

  • High schooler gains independence
Color: Exam Reader
According to my dyslexic daughter "The C-pen exam reader is great!" She doesn't use her dominant hand when using the C-pen, allowing her to slow down and follow along with a sentence, limiting mistakes. If she goes fast and is not following the line exactly, then the C-pen has a hard time reading. The controls are very easy to use, changing between left and right-handed or American vs British accents. With the exam reader, she uses her reader on exams, homework, class work, and SAT prep course. The C-pen allows her to be more independent by not having to ask for help with reading. My daughter is in high school and it was important to provide her with the tools she will need to be successful going forward, therefore, we found it is worth the money (for us). ... show more

  • Low volume
Color: Exam Reader
So far so good only thing is that the volume is really low without the headphones and only goes up to 30.
