  • 4K UHD is four times as many pixels as Full HD*. This is a huge difference, and it shows. License plates can be made out more clearly and from further away.
  • Besides, you dont need a 4K monitor to appreciate 4K videos. Even on a Full HD monitor, you can zoom in much further without any visible pixilation.
  • HD = 1280720 pixels (0. 92 million pixels); Full HD = 19201080 (2. 07 million pixels) = 2. 25 x HD pixel count 4K UHD = 38402160 (8. 29 million pixels) = 4 x Full HD or 9 x HD pixel count

Top Amazon Reviews

  • Overpriced, buggy.
Style: Dashcam
This is an updated review, with the latest software updates installed. First, the good: 1. Having two cameras recording on a single Micro SD card is convenient. While BlackVue pretty aggressively tries to sell you cheap Chinese MicroSD cards for a premium price, any MicroSD card will work. I use Samsung EVO 128GB cards without issues. 2. After my initial review, where I said that the dynamic range of the camera is poor, they’ve released a software update, which added what they call “HDR” mode. It’s not the real HDR by any means, but it did improve the daytime dynamic range quite a bit, so on a sunny day the details in both shadows and highlights are resolved much better. The night performance, however, is terrible. Now for the bad parts: 1. The software is INCREDIBLY bad! There’s a setting in the firmware configuration, which allows you to schedule the camera reboots. This alone is a strong indicator of how bad their software is. But even with the scheduled reboots, the camera crashes 2-3 times a day. That’s how terrible the firmware is. 2. The GPS is probably the worst I’ve ever seen in an electronic device. It works maybe about 30% of the time. Even when the car is parked under a wide open sky - the GPS has a very hard time getting a position fix. 3. The G-sensor is terrible: it gets set off even by the slightest bump in the road, or by a loud sounds in the music you’re listening to! Yet, it doesn’t get set off by an actual impact. I’ve had a minor fender-bender about 2 months ago, which the camera did not detect. But every day I get several dozens of impact notifications from just regular driving. Most of those are from the music I’m listening to while driving. 3. Low light (night) performance, as mentioned above, is terrible. No details resolve outside of the headlight cone. Compare that to Sony FDR-X3000, which costs about as much, but shoots video at 4K resolution, and at night with no light it still manages to resolve all the details in the darkest areas of the frame, with very little noise! (Yes. Sony X3000 still has the noise, but it’s very uniform and nearly invisible, when the video is played back) 4. The WiFi connection is very flimsy. When the camera is set up to connect to a 5GHz WiFi network - it takes several minutes for it to connect. When connected - the throughput is very slow, you can’t watch a video from the camera without constant buffering interruptions, even when you connect directly to the camera’s WiFi. If it’s connected to the “cloud” - then watching the video becomes pretty much impossible. 5. The mounts that come with the camera are not adjustable. You can’t move the camera once it’s installed. You can tilt the camera up or down, but not left and right. I had wasted 3 (three!!!) adhesive pads before I could get the front camera leveled and well centered. 6. The iPhone app is really bad. The UI is insanely convoluted, with no apparent logic what’s where. There’s an option to “delete” clips in the clip list menu, but no way to select the clips to delete. Clips can only be imported one at a time, no way to select multiple clips. No way to format the SD card either. 7. When connected to the camera via WiFi directly, the camera “announces” itself as the default router, so no internet connection on your phone, while it’s connected to the camera - just one more indicator as to how clueless the software developers are, in addition to all the software issues I have (and those I have not) mentioned. With all that said, the camera does have a value. It will help you prove your innocence in an insurance dispute. But, if you hope to get any footage off of it for the purposes other than insurance - I suggest you get something like Sony FDR-X3000 camera. Much better image quality, and none of the issues I’ve mentioned above. And it costs about the same. Or you can get 4 (!!!) more reliable dashcams with much, MUCH better software that don’t crash, like Rove 4K, for the same price. This is a good example of how somewhat decent hardware can be ruined by terrible software. ... show more

  • Great camera with underwhelming mounts but helpful features.
Style: Dashcam
Great camera. I wish the back was also 4k. Night vision is not that great though. My much cheaper dashcam has better night clarity. Though, the most annoying gripe I have is the mounts. Especially the front one. At a $500 price point, I'd expect an easily ajustable mount to change camera angles AND left/right rotation. The mount allows you to change the vertical angle but not left/right, which makes precise mounting way more crucial and a pain than it needs to be. My cheaper dashcams (over half the cost)came with easy to install/remove and adjust mounts. Although I took great care to make this Blackvue mount center and balanced as possible, I installed it ever so slightly at an angle and now my dash cam video looks slightly aimed to the right. I can't do anything about it (other than remove and reinstall) because this mount uses sticky adhesive that can't be easily moved and can't tilt left/right as already stated. Such a petty misalignment causing so much annoyance. The mount should be much more flexible and better engineered at this price point. As for the cloud feature, it is awesome. I purchased a hotspot device that stays in my car. It has a built in battery so it stays powered even when the car is off. I got mine at a big box store and am using a prepaid sim card to enable the 4GLTE service. Connected that to my Blackvue cam via wifi. Blackvue cam is connected to a Blackvue battery so it stays on even after the car is off. So I have car surveillance 24/7 from my phone or computer using Blackview's apps. Parking modes come in motion/collision detect, continuous 1 frame per second time lapse, and I believe parking mode can be disabled all together for nonstop normal recording. Both front and back cams can be on during parking mode. Free cloud plan is limited but can't bring myself to spend 10 bucks a month to look at my dashcam footage past the free 10 mins/day. ... show more

  • Videos are crystal clear when the DashCam is working...
Style: Dashcam
This DashCam is great... When it's working. I may have received a defective unit, and I have returned it and gone to a spare Thinkware unit that my friend had sitting around. The video quality is stunning when you play it back and license plates are easily legible. At night its almost as good, but it varies on how easily plates can be read based on the amount of the light in the area you're in (to be expected). My issues started when I went on a road trip this past week. I enjoy driving with the windows down vs using the A/C and it is possible that this DashCam doesn't do too well when it doesn't have a constant flow of cool air. It gave an audible overheat shutdown warning multiple times in the 6 hours I was driving which defeats the purpose of a dashcam as it wasn't recording for 15 minute segments. After I got back, I noticed the DashCam was no longer turning on and I'm positive it isn't a wiring issue since it's plugged into the USB port currently as I don't want to mess with wiring. After looking online I have found that other users experienced the overheat warning, while others have had no problems. I have decided to return at this time and wait for BlackVue's next gen for my next purchase. Hopefully they have corrected the overheat issues then and I don't get a defective unit! ... show more
