Very nice looking device. Where is the promised Android P update?
I replaced my aging iphone 5s with this Asus Zenfone 5Q. So far, I really love this phone. It is a very attractive phone with a great screen, fast processor with plenty of storage and memory. The cameras seem to be quite good as well. It even came with a decent TPU case! I will be giving them a good test and will add some pics later. Calls are clear and signal strength seems consistent. This is a very good phone considering the price. It comes with Android Nougat 7.1 with a promise to upgrade to Oreo 8 within the next couple of months. I can live with that, as long as the update happens as promised. I will update this review as needed based on further experiences. I have now had this phone for about three months. Overall, I am very happy with it, however, Asus needs to make some clear statement as to when either the Android 8 or Android 9 update will happen. On the US website, it still states that the Oreo update would happen in Q3. Other people claim that they are skipping Oreo and will update to Android P in Q1 of 2019. When I bought the phone, the website said it came with Oreo, which is not true. Not a great way to gain customer loyalty. Just a quick update on this phone. The phone still works great, however is now mid-Feb and the promised Android P update still has not surfaced. This makes me skeptical about ever buying another ASUS product. Not only has the update not happened, but ASUS has been rather sketchy about providing information about this.

Not reliable
6 months in it stopped receiving cellular signal. Tried different SIMs, took it to AT&T and they said it was not an issue on their end but a hardware failure in the phone. ASUS wouldn't even warranty it out despite the fact that the warranty is 12 months and I've had it for 6. Would not recommend if you keep your devices for at least a year.

Not worth the price.
When I received this phone the phone would not work properly. It was laggy and full of bugs. The system update wouldn't work at all so I got on ASUS website and downloaded a firmware update that updated the phone but it was still Android 7.1.1 unlike the advertisements online saying it has Android 8. It does not have Android 8 and they have not released an update to Android 8 and if they do good luck getting it to work. After the manually updated firmware the phone did work better. The camera on the rear phone is slow and horrible. The wide angle camera doesn't make up for it. The selfie camera is suprisingly not bad. Not much detail though. The UI is horrible. Overall I can't say I'd recommend anyone buy this phone. Even at 299$ I feel it's too expensive. Spend your money on something else worth buying.

Great basic phone, Asus needs to rethink their Auto-start setting
So i have very little to complain about with this phone. cool cameras, more than enough RAM, great CPU, and Asus doesnt load to much junk on it. however, when i first started to use this phone, apps would not auto start or run in the background, this was irritating. I tried factory reset, battery options, app options, NOTHING WORKED. Asus support (which is usually really good) hung up on me and pissed me off, after an hour of screwing with the setting, i figure out there is a hidden "Auto-start setting" the phone uses to save RAM. so nothing would work unless it was in memory before i found this setting, after i found it by complete accident, everything begain to work. Asus needs to make this "Auto-start setting" more visible and allow the user to disable or enable it during the startup with the phone. this setting is awesome, i love it! BUT, Asus needs to show and explain it before enabling the setting so people like me don't get pissed off and start looking at new phones.

Asus Support is lying when they state this phone comes with Android Oreo or P
Overall, zenfone 5q is good but it is not coming with the latest android version. It comes with Android 7.1. Do not trust Asus Support's answer.

Great great value for Asus hardware/device fans at $300.00 US
Came as advertised. All manufacturer specs are accurate. Screen, build quality, radio performance are all great. Using this phone on att network in south florida. It works great in an area where the att network is not always stellar. This asus performs admirably. Reviewing the 5Q white 64gb model. Consistently the best carrier signal i have experienced thus far with a budget to mid-range unlocked gsm phone on att. Asus ui is great - some good fonts to choose from. Coolest screenshot utility i have seen. You can take long screenshots down a website. I really like the "long" screenshot tool baked into the asus rom. Really cool option. It may not be a "flagship" but i was waiting to try an asus phone for a bit. I really have no complaints. Very happy with this device.

Great phone at a good price
I was a Windows Mobile/Phone/Mobile guy until Microsoft decided to stop supporting their mobile OS. I reluctantly switched over to an ASUS Zenphone last year. The phone worked fine, using mostly Microsoft services, and a Windows Phone skin which was more familiar to me... and still the best UI ever created. But with only 2GB RAM and 16GB memory (my SIM blocked the slot for a MicroSD), the device was really sluggish. I'm done with the $600+ smartphones. I've bought enough of those to fill a shoebox, so I went looking for an economical replacement. I liked the simplified ASUS skin on top of the Android OS vs. something from Samsung, so I was hooked on the brand. My powerful desktops are both made by ASUS. This phone offered me 4GB RAM, 64GB memory, and room for a 64GB MicroSD. Setup was simple and it has been a great experience this past month. It's as quick, or quicker than any of my $600 Windows phones. One of the knocks for this phone was that it was still running Android 7.1, with (delayed) promises from ASUS of an upgrade to Android by third quarter 2019. Well, last night ASUS had an update for me - and 15 minutes later I was running Android 9. Problem solved. For under $300, this phone is a good deal.
