The hand-crank gears have very smooth motion. Even my 3 yr old grandson could do some decent cranking on it! The unit does need to be mounted on a board or clamped down, or it tends to lift up as you crank (even the 3 yr old could send it walking!) We used this extractor yesterday for the first time, and it works quite well. We extracted honey from six shallow frames. The frames flopped about somewhat, but held their place while spinning them. I learned that it's not necessary to spin the frames really fast (to the point where the unit jumps around like an unbalanced clothes washer on spin), but at a moderate speed for several minutes. Assembly will get you cut if your not careful. Made with cheap Chinese metal and there are sharp edges on the leg stands. Use caution. Also the screws may not thread properly and you will get shearing and thread damage if you apply force.

Like easy of use. Sturdy made. I used it in training my boxerpits. They fear the zap sound. They were fighting. Tapped em once. Now they know the sound and feeling. No more fighting. Sound is all need to correct them.

I sent this back because there was no way to attach the lid. The manual shows pictures of attaching the handle and says attach lid with screws, but there is nothing to attach it to. Both halves just sit on top floating and sliding back and forth.

We have only one hive, so a hand cranked, three frame unit is just the right size for us. It works well and being manual we can take it into the field if we wanted to do our harvesting there. Face the facts, cleaning up after harvesting honey is a mess, so it is hard to hold anything against the unit for being messy. This cleans up fairly easily with hot water and some soap. ... show more
