Description

Tried & True was first conceived around 1990 when a master cabinet maker in upstate New York became concerned over the amount of toxins that he was exposed to on a daily basis and thought, "How did people create pieces that last hundreds of years in a time when todays solvents and chemicals were unknown?" This question led to years of research centered around Shaker and early American woodworking and finishing, resulting in a line of products based on natural linseed (flax) oil and additives (beeswax, pine resin) that would have been available on an early American frontier with no modern processing. Every Tried & True product is made from 100% renewable ingredients and free from all solvents, has 0 VOCs, no synthetic compounds, no toxic heavy metal drying agents or anything else that could be harmful to humans, pets or planet.

I wish there were more pictures online of the different finishes on different woods. However this worked well. The smell went away after about a month. The picture is one coat of mahogany on unfinished pine.

Pretty easy to use. Used on Rubberwood butcher block from Lowe’s. I don’t like the yellow color that happens after you add mineral oil (Picture) so I add one layer of stain and followed directions and made sure I rubbed it in well. Created a oak color after I add mineral oil. (Picture of full butcher block). I like the color but may darken it once the butcher block fully cures. The picture was taken two weeks after the stain was applied one with mineral oil just applied the other when it is dry. Only bummer is that The Butcher Block has wood grains that has a hard time excepting oil or stain, but that’s due to the material of the butcher block ... show more

I tried the dark walnut on a basswood relief carving and it worked great. I’ve used many other types of stains on basswood without any luck. This stuff went on evenly and looks amazing. I’ll be using tried and true from now on.

    • Watch out for Operator Error
We bought this product to seal untreated southern yellow pine boards to make raised gardening beds and we wanted the beds to match our log house seal. We also wanted to lessen dangerous chemicals for wood surrounding the vegetables we were going to eat! It was easy to rub on and dried to a beautiful color. The "operator error" comes in by us not continually stirring up the pigments back into the stain, so we got boards of varying colors. The manufacturer tells you to stir a lot; we just didn't stir enough. Yes, it rubs off at first. We think it is because, once again, we didn't take the manufacturer seriously when they said to rub the boards with the stain and rub again until dry, but after a week, we noticed that we weren't turning red as we sealed the boards.
