  • Smooth
Size: IX4000R
Removing the spool confused me but actually simple. Tighten the drag then turn spool counter clockwise. Great reel. I like the smooth bail operation. This is not a beginners reel, nor a cheap reel, it will last a long time and gets the job done. The price is amazing. Always loved Shimano.

  • Great little reel.
Size: IX4000R
Super lightweight smaller reel for panfish and the like. Solid. Easy to use. Cast nicely too. Probably okay for ice fishing too.

  • Excellent reel even when not considering the price.
Size: One Size
For those curios: I have two of the 2000's and this 1000. The 2000 and 1000 are the exact same reel with different spools installed. These are great moving water reels. By that I mean creeks/streams and rivers. The 4:1 gear ratio is excellent for spoon and spinner retrieval in moving water. I find it a little slow for ponds and lakes, but it just requires a little more speed on my part to get the proper action from lures in still waters. As they are at 4:1, so long as you choose the proper weight of lure for your water, it's very comfortable to get spinners like panther martins running as intended or to get the right action on a spoon like a krocodile etc. The drag control being on the bottom of these reels adds to the length/size of them, but it's also conducive to good balance. I suppose some of it depends on the rod you choose, but I have this 1000 paired with a 4 piece 5' ugly stick and the balance point is exactly behind the trigger ahead of the mount. When I had a much more expensive front drag control reel on the 4 piece, the balance point was at least an inch and a half further forward. I have one of the 2000s on a medium/light 7' ugly stick and the balance point is exactly behind the trigger ahead of the mount. ... It may not matter to everyone where the balance point is, but when I was a kid, I was taught it matters for long and/or accurate casting. My decades of experience tell me it seems to be true that the balance point relationship to the position of your hand while casting makes a big difference. My oldest lx2000 is a two-tone grey/black and has to be getting close to 25 or more years old. It has been in service the whole time. I couldn't even guess how many thousands of casts or hundreds of fish it has reeled in. So, durability and reliability are worth mention. Just because these reels are inexpensive doesn't mean they are cheap. They hold up well. ... show more

  • My All Time Favorite !
I found my first Shimano IX2000 reel in the garbage attached to a broken rod. Took it home and cleaned it and it worked perfect. I've been fishing with it many times and it continues to be flawless in function, and easy to maintain. When I wanted another one I looked to Amazon and couldn't believe the price. My new reel is identical to the garbage find. It functions flawlessly. The rear drag and trigger design of this reel really set it apart. It doesn't have instant anti-reverse but rather reverses until the trigger is in the right position. Sometimes you might have to back up a half turn to get it in the right position to cast. I've heard others say this is a problem when you set the hook. I haven't had a problem at all setting hooks and you'll get used to the trigger after a few casts. Having the drag in the rear is ideal when adjusting during a battle. This reel is light, inexpensive, strong and easy to maintain. Rinse it after use, oil it up when you have nothing better to do, and this reel should last a long time. I've got mine on a 7' Berkely Lightening rod and my older on on a 6 1/2' Lightening rod. The balance on these rigs is amazing. I've had many rods and reels in my 50 years of fishing, but these rigs are my favorite all time. ... show more

  • What an awesome little reel
If you want fancy and shiny, shop elsewhere. If you want good simple value for money, this is it. If it goes overboard, it won't break the bank and I'll just order another on the same day. No better reel out there for the price.

  • Pull trigger casting!
Size: IX4000R
Gotta love this concept makes it much easier casting when your hands are numb all the time! Rear drag is easy twist for higher or lower drag, casts great too!!

one of my favorite reels, I have a few of them in different sizes. Like the drag and the handy trigger to cast. seller isn't the best but I guess we have to take the mediocre vendors with the good ones
