This now prevents that and other objects from slipping between them. It is a little longer than our mattress and hangs off the end, but this doesn't really bother us. I have a king-size bed and prefer no headboard, but my pillows kept falling through the crack between my mattress and the wall (I know, first-world problems, which is why I hesitated to buy this for such a silly/minor problem).
