These are very nice and have a beautiful finish. They are made of Beech Wood and finished with beeswax. I don't recall that this information was provided anywhere on Amazon. I haven't used them enough to see any "wear" on the surface but, if that occurs in the future, it would be simple to apply a light coat of beeswax to brighten up the surface. I'm just thinking ahead. I suppose that if you are a real purist and concerned about affecting the taste of the drink, you may not want to do that but personally I would be OK with it. However, it may be a moot point because you possibly will never need to do anything to the surface. To me, there is just a satisfying feeling associated with drinking good Bourbon, that has spent years ageing in wooded barrels, from a wooden vessel. This represents a good value from something that I expect to enjoy for years. I bought two; one for me and one for whomever is lucky enough to drink my good Bourbon with me! ... show more

[Update] The seller contacted me about the issue so updating this to a 4. I managed to seal it with some Odie's Oil I had, if you run into this issue give that a shot. The cup seemed great but after just a few uses it developed a crack and now leaks everywhere when trying to use it. I carefully made sure to only handwash it, dry it after washing, etc yet it still cracked very quickly. I see no way to contact the seller either. ... show more
