  • Fantastic drill but 1 irritation about the manufacturing process.
I absolutely LOVE this drill. It is rather heavy at just over 70 pounds but the adjustable mag base makes it very capable without the need to be extremely precise on your initial placement. Being a job shop I bought this drill to perform a wide array of tasks, some of which including drilling rather large holes with standard twist drills. I bought a premium drill chuck from MSC, a Jacobs chuck so I know the issue is not from the chuck, also verified the chuck with indicators just to be sure but having installed the chuck on my Milwaukee 4208 Mag drill the end of my 1/2" - 5" long twist drill was running about .030" (30 thousandths of an inch) out of round. The drill is straight and I found my chuck surface was .018" out of round so I removed the chuck and adapting sleeve from the motor spindle so that I could check the spindle to see if it turned true to center but much to my surprise the spindle is .002" (2 thousandths) out of round. I couldn't believe that a brand new drill could have a spindle that was not absolutely true. I put a 9" long 7/8" twist drill in my chuck and the end of the drill was just under an 1/8" out of round. I called Milwaukee and informed them of the error and their surprise matched mine and directed me to my local authorized repair shop about an hour away. I dropped the drill off, showed the tech my problem, his reaction matched mine, "never in my days have I seen one like this," he said and that it may take a week to repair. I left my name and number, thanked him and headed out the door. Four hours later the repair man called me back and said I could come pick up my drill that there was in fact no error. Apparently talking to a different technical service rep than I had earlier that same day, he was informed that a run-out of .002" was acceptable and that in fact their factory tolerance was a spindle run-out of .006"! (6 thousandths of an inch!!!!!) Neither the tech nor myself could believe what we were being told. Milwaukee does not care if you drill an accurate hole. I realize that some iron worker may not care about his drill bit walking around a good 1/8" or 1/16" but in my life that's ludicrous. .002" isn't much at the spindle but compound that error over an 11" twist drill and you've got a problem. I'm going to fix mine myself and make it dead on accurate by grinding the spindle out tool chroming the adapter and grinding it down to match the bore but I wanted to make sure to post here to let everyone know that this is an issue you may have to face if you're counting on it being a very accurate drill. To most I'm sure it doesn't matter but if I have a problem with it I'm sure another machinist somewhere will appreciate knowing what he's getting into ahead of time. Outside of this spindle run-out problem the drill is an absolute BEAST!! I love the drill and it has served me well since I got it and I'm sure it will serve me well into the future. Thanks for your time and enjoy the drill. I sure am! ... show more
