  • less landfill, better shave, easy maintenance
Color: Silver Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
after decades of using cheap cartridge shavers with multiple blades, I have switched back to a single blade in a simple safety razor for my face; it produces less landfill as only the blade needs to be be replaced when worn out, rather than cartridge head of blades and often the handle too due to mis-matched handle-head issues with cartridge based shavers... simple, elegant, and very sturdy; I love this Merkur and how well it is built to last a lifetime and uses standard double edge blades which are cheap, easy to get in a variety of brands, can be sharpened and recycle easily as steel only with no plastic the shave is smooth and skin less irritated I do keep a pivoting head cartridge handy for shaving places that are less simple than my face; but I am not sure I really need to as I quickly re-adapted to handling the fixed head safety razor and the handle is so short it is easy to adjust angle for the best shave ... show more

  • Good for beginners and built to last a lifetime!
I must start out by saying I am one of those men with a beard that seems to be made of wire and skin that is incredibly sensitive - shaving has never been fun, easy or without issues since I was a teenager. The majority of my life has been spent shaving with those lovely cartridge razors that burn your skin and your wallet leaving you unhappy and with a dread of shaving; something that in today's world is nearly a must in all professional circles. I decided to purchase this razor after 3 weeks of research into wet shaving and in all honesty with much reluctance to try something that held a razor capable of leaving you in need of stitches. In essence this was a "last resort" in an attempt to get that close shave that lasted more than half a day and didn't leave me feeling uncomfortable. When my razor arrived, I inserted the Merkur blade that comes with the razor, lathered up and began to shave after taking a deep breath and resigning myself to potential nicks and scrapes...I was so wrong in thinking this way. The 34c provided a smooth, comfortable shave with no pulling of my beard, no unpleasant burn after each stroke and surprisingly it was even fun. The 34c is brilliantly designed and the chrome finish and heft make it a pleasure to own and to use. The knurled handle offers plenty of grip, loading the razor is incredibly easy and it feels sturdy and stable in your hand. My very first shave was closer than any I've ever had before and so much more pleasant. My wife is amazed and incredibly happy with my shaves now. If this is your first DE razor you are on the right track. I must offer a bit of advice though: Do not think that the short handle is going to be a burden, this design actually makes it easier to use and to apply the proper technique. Let me repeat that last part, TECHNIQUE, is essential in wet shaving. There is no pivot-head which means you must be aware of and account for the organic curvature of your face and neck. A longer handled razor will only impede your learning, your technique and ultimately affect your shave! Also, if you purchase this razor, start off with the Merkur blade but don't be afraid to try other blades. A multi-pack with an assortment of blades would be a good purchase as well so that you can try out other manufacturers and find the best fit for your skin and beard type. So far, for me, the Merkur blade is wonderful! Don't forget to get a good soap (I use Art of Shaving cream for ease of use) and a good badger brush to lather with. These are essentials to a good wet-shave! You won't be disappointed! There is something to be said for shaving with a DE razor. Most of us today shave without a thought to how much of shaving is tradition as well as necessity. Our fathers and grandfathers and further back passed tradition on as well and many of them shaved with a DE or a straight edge but with the advent of the cartridge razor the tradition has nearly died out. Cartidges take out the need for learning, technique and patience. Shaving with a DE brings back this tradition among men and puts this time-honored right of passage back in our hands. Try a DE, you will get a wonderful shave and possible develop nostalgia for those simpler times when men were proud to be men and life involved reminders of what is meant to be a man in daily life. Pros: Excellent, sturdy design Heft and weight offer a effortless shave DE technique is easy to learn due to the design Blades are cheap! What you pay for replacement cartridges would buy you almost a year supply of DE blades Cleaning is incredibly easy Razor won't clog with hair like cartridges do Cons: Shave time increased for me but only by 5 minutes Shave prep is more extensive but worth it Smaller handle does take time to get used to but as I mentioned it has a purpose UPDATE: 3/26/2013 So here I am, on vacation and the one thing I forgot to pack was my Merkur. I thought I'd catch a quick shave with one of my wife's Schick razors and it was like rubbing sandpaper across my face. The final shave is terrible, my face is still full of stubble and nowhere near close to the shave I can achieve with my old-school Merkur. Thank God for Prime shipping - I'm ordering another Merkur so I can shave while away from home. So lesson to be learned: never go away without your Merkur...your face won't be pleased. ... show more

  • Had the best shave of my life today
Had the best shave of my life today! I had decided to try a different razor after using the Mach 3 for a decade and a halfish. I tried the dollar shave club 4 bladed razor and hated it. It tore up my face and had a really weird angle on the handle. Today I received in the mail the King of shaves hyperglide razor and the MERKUR 34c. (I am still waiting on my Harrys razor to show up per a recommendation). I tried the hyperglide on one side of my face and the MERKUR on the other side. The hyperglide was excellent! It was a very smooth shave with fewer passes than the Mach 3. The blades have a patented super hydrophilic coating that create a microscopic barrier between the blade and your skin. It was very smooth. I did nic myself once though. I think due to the odd angle of the handle. It bends away from the face rather than towards the face which is different from any other razor I have ever used. Hair did get stuck between the blades but a quick rinse and the whiskers came out nice and easy. I truly enjoyed the the shave. On the other side of my face I used the MERKUR 34c with feather blades. This razor is a double edge safety razor rather than today's standard cartridge style razors. This thing was amazballs! Any double edge blade will fit this razor. I bought a blade sampler package of different manufacturers but tried feather first. This thing was crazy smooth and had no irritation. The short handle is great for how I like to shave. The handle has a nice heft. Other safety razors have various length handles but the short handle was a personal preference for me. The control of the single blade was so much better especially for edge work on the side burns and goatee over the multi blade cartridge razors. I can't say this enough.... Best shave ever! Costs Mach 3 approx $10 for handle $3 per blade Kings shave hyperglide $10 for handle and $4 per blade Dollar shave club first handle free And $1.50 per blade but you have to sign up for monthly mailings. Canceling the subscription was not as easy as it should have been and you have to sign up for the subscription just to try it out. After I canceled they did offer me my money back. The hassle of canceling + the offer for my money back are a bit of a wash in my book. The MERKUR 34c was $30 for the handle and blades are $0.10 each. I also sprung for a 100% Badger hair shaving brush $15 and chrome stand $15 and some shave soap. The old school safety razor is fantastic! It's a bit more up front cost but ongoing replacement blades are far cheaper. On quality of shave alone the old school safety razor is far superior to all the cartridge razors ( and disposables) I have ever tried. Though the Mach 3 and the kings shave hyperglide do produce nice shaves. The old school safety razor produces a smoother better shave and has lower long term costs. (break even point including shave brush and stand is somewhere around a year depending how may blades you go through) The MERKUR with the stand and brush are also classy as hell! For traveling I think I will either go with the King of shaves hyperglide or the Harrys razor (pending trial). But for home I'm going with the Merkur 34c all the way! ... show more
