  • WORKS SURPRISINGLY WELL!!!
I was not expecting to like this mopping tool before I ordered it and when I opened the box I was sure it was going to be returned based purely on it's appearance. The thing is only 7"x7" and it looks too tiny to really do anything. I was however quite surprised on how well it works. We have 3 different types of flooring throughout our house consisting of vinyl sheet flooring, engineered hardwood and carpet. The kitchen (11"x16"), breakfast nook (11'x11') and all of the 2-1/2 bathrooms are vinyl. The entrance foyer (8'x18') is engineered hardwood. Before using the Braava in either of it's wet modes, it is recommended that you thoroughly vacuum or sweep the floor because the Braava is only made to mop floors, not to vacuum or sweep them. If you don't vacuum or sweep first, you will wind up pushing small debris around the room and creating a mess. The first test was to tackle the breakfast nook. I used the invisible wall mood to prevent Braava from going into the kitchen which adjourns the breakfast nook. Rather than having the Braava maneuver around the table and chair legs, I flipped the chairs over and put them on top of the table and pushed the table to the far end of the room. As the Braava did it's zig-zag pattern in the room, I re-positioned the table a few times to keep the table legs out of the path of the Braava. The breakfast nook is a perfectly square room and the Braava completed the task perfectly. The last thing it did was to go around the perimeter 0f the room to get all the edges. Our carpeted family room adjourns the breakfast nook on one side and the Braava did not go past the edging of the carpet. Job done perfectly!! The next task (after recharging) was the kitchen. Again, I set up the invisible wall to prevent Braava from going back into the breakfast nook. I was amazed as the Braava began it's job. It began going the length of the kitchen and when it got about 12' into the room it made a u-turn and came back to where it started. It continued the zig-zag overlapping pattern until it completed the first 12' of the room. It then traveled beyond the first 12' and began a zig-zag pattern in the opposite direction until it completed the entire floor. It then spent considerable time going in different directions until it eventually covered all of the edges of the kitchen. It was actually interesting to watch. When it was finished, I gave a close inspection and found that it had cleaned the floor as good or better that if I had done it by hand with a mop. I had intentionally let the floor get dirtier than I normally would knowing I was going to be testing the Braava and it passed the test with flying colors. As to exactly how it works, I think that the iRobot engineers put a lot of thought into the design of the tool. It uses warm water only and the cleaning agent is in the pad itself so I don't think there will be a clogging problem with the jet in the future because of residual cleaners. It uses so little water, I will probable use distilled water in the future to help prevent jet clogging down the road. The pad itself vibrates to help the cleaning action, similar to the action of a hand-held sander. With the wet mop pad on it, the Braava moves in a Y pattern much like you would do using a sponge mop or swiffer. When you put the damp mop pad on it, the Braava only goes forward and back and squirts less water on the floor. This is what I used in the foyer on the engineered wood flooring because I do not want too much water on the wood floor. The third choice of pad is the dusting pad that uses no water and causes the Braava to got in a continuous forward zig-zag motion. The Braava senses which pad you are using and operates accordingly. One of the things that surprised me was the size of the battery. When I unboxed the Braava and saw the battery, I thought that it was going to be the weak point of the tool. The instructions state that it must be charged for two hours before using and it probably took pretty close to that on the first charge. When it finished the first 11'x11' room, I put the battery back in the charger and it only took about 15 or 20 minutes for it to get back to full charge. The only caveat I would add to this review is that it works extremely well on smooth floors without high and low spots. I would imagine it will not do as well on heavily textured tile or stone floors especially if they have deep grout lines. I have seen other reviewers say this and I can fully understand why. My wife and I are both in our eighties and the Braava is definitely going to make our lives a lot easier. ... show more

  • Bot Cousteau is a hard working little mopper
About a week after purchasing E-Sweepio, our iRobot Roomba 650 vacuum, and talking with a friend who owned one of these, I took the plunge and welcomed Bot Cousteau (the iRobot Braava Jet 240) into our home. Our whole downstairs is porcelain tile and hard surface flooring so there's a lot to mop. And moping the floor is one of my least favorite jobs. The best way to clean a dirty kitchen floor is on hands and knees with a trusty old rag and some sort of cleaning spray. Bot Cousteau can't equal that, but he does a darn good job on normal spots and stains. The water that you dripped from the hummingbird feeder and then walked over with shoes for the last two days? It probably won't get all of that. And the half of a sweet potato fry that was dropped unnoticed, stepped on and then dried on overnight? Probably won't get all of that off either. But it will mop up the drips of coffee or spatters from the stove and ordinary dirt that mysteriously appears from walking on the floors. In fact, it gets at least 97% of the dirt. Bot Cousteau moves in a fairly organized pattern compared to the Roomba vacuum. You set it at the lower left hand side of the area you want to mop and it moves to the right. There are 3 different types of disposable pads you can use, plus a reusable mopping pad. The disposable pads are a blue wet mopping pad, an orange damp mopping pad and a white dry sweeping or dusting pad. Two of each come with the iRobot Braava, which automatically selects the correct cleaning mode based on Braava jet pad type. The pads have a light clean scent. The reusable mopping pad is unscented and gets the floor wetter than the others. Bot Cousteau doesn't suck up water, so these pads do a similar job to what a Swiffer would do, without you having to push it around. Our whole downstairs is porcelain tile and other hard surface flooring and it's a pretty large space, so I have to refill the water reservoir a few times during the cleaning. At that time I remove the cleaning pad, rinse off whatever dirt I can and put it back on. They are supposed to be single use but they can actually be used a few times. The only time I don't reuse them is when mopping the bathrooms. Bot Cousteau measures 6.5 x 7 inches wide and is about 3.5 inches high with the wheels. At first I wondered why they didn't make him a similar size to the Roomba, but the beauty of this compact size is that it does a great job of getting around toilets and between cabinets in the bathroom. It gets to the places that are difficult to reach in the kitchen and family room too, places that I just sort of "overlook" when doing it by hand. I think the size and square shape are perfect. The Braava runs on a rechargeable battery that comes with a little charger that you plug into the wall. It takes about two hours to charge and runs for well over an hour. It runs quietly. It runs in a fairly organized pattern compared to the Roomba, but manages to move around furniture and chair legs and walls that run at angles. Like E-Sweepio (our Roomba), Bot Cousteau manages to clean the whole room. We just let him do his own thing, refilling the water when the floor seems to be dry behind him. He will usually go back to where he started when finished, although he sometimes runs out of battery power and we have to recharge. (He doesn't have a dock) There are 3rd party replacement batteries available on Amazon (and perhaps some from iRobot, but I can't find them) that would be a good idea if you have a lot of floor space and don't want to worry about recharging in between. I am far from being a meticulous housekeeper or even dreaming of becoming one, but between E-Sweepio and Bot Cousteau my floors look like I am, all the time. It's easy to clean a little dustbin or change a mop pad and than push a button and watch these guys get to work. And I love the technology that makes them so much more effective than I ever dreamed they would be. ... show more
