  • Very easy to use
The media could not be loaded. I have used several different brands of hydroponics systems and I have learned what to look for and what to avoid. I wouldn't bother with the cheaper kits, because they end up being more expensive in the long run. This includes everything you need to get started for not one, but two harvests. Once you add the cost of nutrients, growing medium, and lights to the other systems, this is a bargain. I prefer the larger square grow sponges. They are a little harder to find than the skinny ones that areogarden sells, but much easier to use. The plants grow better with a thicker and more stable base plus they are easier to remove from the little baskets ... show more

  • An Interesting Hobby Project
This is a nice hobby kit for those who like to grow a small supply of herbs, leafy greens, or dwarf plants. This hydroponic garden will not work for regular size tomatoes, peppers, or any root vegetables. Set-up is straightforward, and in an hour or so, you can have all twelve pods planted and the system running. I have used mine for one week, and so far, I am happy with it. I am growing mainly herbs and lettuce, which I plan to harvest when eating size. I am also trying a dwarf tomato and pepper, but I am not sure how these will do. The herbs and greens I am growing in this garden I grew this summer outdoors, so I am familiar with the results this garden should attain if it performs as advertised. No seeds of any type come with this kit, so these need to be supplied by the user. If you are new to hydroponics, I recommend using lettuce and maybe spinach for your initial greens. You can harvest these at almost any size, and even small leaves make tasty snacks. I snack on my leafy greens all summer long from my garden. For herbs, my recommendations are chives, basil, parsley, thyme, oregano, and mint. These can be clipped easily and frequently to keep them to a size the garden can support. All of these taste good regardless of the size of the leaves when clipped. The kit has a spare set of sponges and enough growth solution, divided into an A and B variety, for several months of operation. The instructions say to add growth solution every two weeks and to keep the water level filled up in the interim with plain water. My tap water is fine, and I am using it for this garden. Adding water is simple, and the large, front-mounted refill hatch is convenient and works well. So far, all the electronics work well; the pump comes on and turns off as it should. The pump is quiet and does not cause any noise issues. The lights are on a preset sixteen hours on and eight hours off cycle. This cycle could be a problem if you need to set up your garden in an area of the house where the bright light (and I mean bright) will bother you. In my case, I use a closet for a greenhouse, and the lights are a non-issue. Unfortunately, there is no way to set the lights to come on and off at convenient times. The only solution for adjusting the timing is manually starting the unit when you want the lights to come on. They will go out sixteen hours later and remain off for eight hours. Overall, an interesting hobby experiment with hopefully some tasty munchies somewhere down the line. The photo shows my results after 2 weeks. ... show more

  • Updated Review
Update: the pump quit and the return window has closed. I'm NOT happy. It worked great up until now. Unfortunately, I'm left with a great grow light and no ability to continue using it without constantly needing to change out stagnant water. Very frustrating that it broke within 45 days of use, making this a terrible investment. I like the size. It's big enough to grow a variety of items, but compact enough to fit comfortably in my little indoor greenhouse. I have 2 veggies planted as a test, and I'm hopeful they'll grow well. Definitely make sure you check plant heights before planting to ensure they'll fit when fully grown!!! The water level monitor is simple, yet very effective and makes keeping up on it much easier. Instructions are clear and concise. ... show more

  • So far so good.
I eat mainly plants and fruits all year round, plus a little salmon every now and then. We have a large garden with plenty of room to grow anything we would like. But we live in Arizona and growing veggies outdoors is next to impossible. We do have two huge pomegranate trees that yield so many pomegranates that we don't have the time to eat them, but veggies? No way. When I was offered 3 different hydroponics systems, I jumped in. I imagined it would be great if my large everyday salad could come from my own hydroponics systems. When I started this system, I had already set up one of my other 2 systems, so set up was a breeze despite the awful manual this system came with. All I had to do was plug it in. The food comes in two bottles, A and B, and it is granulated so it has to dissolve well before use. After adding the right amount of food to purified water, the tank is filled in. My other systems have smaller tanks and I initially made the mistake to use less water than is needed in this one. Water was added and I made sure the pods were in contact with the water. All we have to do is lift one of the baskets with the pods in them and check if the bottom of the pod is wet. The lights are said to be on for 16 hours and off for 8 hours. My system stays on for 13 hours and off for 11 hours. I started the system at 7 AM so that the lights will be off during the night. I have planted a bunch of different types of lettuce, chard, arugula, kale, etc in all three systems. On this one I went for spinach, a type of sophisticated lettuce that looks like a large flower. I also dared plant some beetroot seeds (!!!) and see what happens. To my surprise the beetroot seeds sprouted after only 3 days ( yaayyy!!) but the winner was the spinach. In only 24 hours, the spinach seeds had sprouted. I am including photos of spinach sprout. Will this system disappoint me one day? I hope not. I sometimes worry about the pump or the lights. I will have to have a back up plan in case the lights of any of my systems ever failed. So far I am hoping everything will continue doing fine. Those tiny spinach sprouts are so cute I am wondering: will I dare eat them after I've seen them grow since birth? Lol, I hope I will. ... show more
