These starter pods are properly shown in the seller's images here at Amazon. They have a recess in their tops and a point at their bottoms. The pointy bottom makes a pod unable to stand on its own in a flat tray of water, and is no doubt made for a special conforming holder or for tube insertion or for a multi-welled tray, none of which I use. I cut off the bottom of each pod with my scissor and, when nestling them up against each other in a tray and soaking their bottoms with water, they do stand on their own. A note on the packaging these pods came in to me. The pods arrived in a plastic bag with a plastic-zippered top. The zipper was taped over with wide clear tape, which then made its way around the bag. I found it difficult to remove the tape, especially around the zipper, and it took some doing to get the tape off without damaging the bag and the zipper themselves. Take care when you open the bag your first time, go slowly. The bag also had a warning sticker attached to it's exterior, the only original label. On top of this warning label was an Amazon label that obscured the warning, so it couldn't be read. When you get the bag open you can squint and read the warning sticker from behind, through the inside of the bag. It warns to keep away from children, and that, when wet, a pod can act sticky - which may make it more dangerous around children should a pod get inserted and stuck somewhere. So, no worries about a pod being made with toxic waste! There is little to no odor to these pods upon opening their bag, too. There is little nutrition in these pods. Their main purpose is to keep a seed, sprouted seed, the roots of a seedling, moist - and to deliver whatever nutrients you include in your water. The pods do not feel excessively spongy to your hand. In fact, when cutting their bottoms they crumble a bit where cut. But when wet they eagerly absorb water and can wick water up from their base to their recess in their top, which is where you put your seed. When wet, they change the color of the water they sit in to a tea color. The seed placed in the pod then sprouts and its roots look for water, chasing their way through the aerated material of the pods. Once there are established seedlings I plant them, sponge and all. The sponge is said to be made of a natural material so it will only improve my soil. I have very hard clay soil. Yes, I know I have to add amendments to loosen up my soil, but I'm not there yet. Native plant seeds, with the beautiful flowers they grow as they mature, need a shallow hole with very loose soil. These pods are the perfect mimic for such soil (except for having no nutrients - which is solved with a bit of plant food in the water). I needed an appropriate medium to sprout my native plant seeds for my own personal superbloom. I wasn't successful last year when planting directly in the soil. With these pods, this is looking like a much better year. Consider these pods either for their intended hydroponic usage, or as starter media for seedlings that need very loose soil that are later to grow outside in the soil. ... show more
