  • Works nice, battery life could be better
Size: 1 Dog - 1/2 Mile Style: Tom Davis 280C - Boost N Bungee
Bought this collar and within a week the connection between the remote and the collar broke and the device needed to be replaced, amazon refunded it right away after I went through the process, got a new one and it works good, i can't speak to how well it works with my dog, im not a dog trainer and can't say if this works better than other models, I like the way it looks and it seems like it's helping somewhat with outdoor recall which is what I got it for. Water proofing definitely works, dog jumped into the water multiple times and it still works fine. The battery life of the collar piece is around 2 days or so depending on how much you use it and how high you set it, I leave it low and it makes it 3 days if I don't use it much but it's kind of strange to see the battery indicator stay full on the remote while the collar dies. Not a big deal or anything unless im camping, would like the battery in the collar to last as long as the remotes but size difference probly keeps that from being possible. ... show more

  • Great Product! #NoBadDogs
Size: 1 Dog - 1/2 Mile Style: Tom Davis 280C - Boost N Bungee
So, I am coming from using E-Collar Technologies and will be fair and say that I really like them both! I think it is helpful to know how they compare, at least from this user's perspective, to make up your own mind. They are really the only two brands that I would trust using, and I did a lot of research into using these tools as a positive form of communication rather than as a form of aversive training. What I love about the Dogtra 280C Tom Davis Edition: The addition of the boost (that I already had on my Educator) is a must. This allows you to quickly and safely deal with situations of higher distraction while knowing exactly what level you are using. This feature can be customized. I had also already put a bungee collar on my Educator, so I was happy to see that one comes standard on this unit. The biggest plus for me over the Educator seems like such a minor detail, but it really does make the handler's experience far easier. That is that the main stim button is very obviously textured, meaning that when I am out and actively involved with my dog, I always. know that I am holding the unit in the right direction and am using the correct button. That seems like a silly detail, but I do find with the Educator that it is very easy to have the unit turned around and in the moment not realize that I am hitting the vibration or tone button rather than the stim or vice versa. The vibration/pager feature on the Dogtra is far stronger than the Educator. I have tested the quality of the stim from both units on myself. As an acupuncturist that has used tens units in practice, I can say that not all e stim is created equal. Both Dogtra and Educator seem really smooth and comparable in that regard. (I do have a comfort adapter that I got included on my Educator that I have yet to purchase from Dogtra, so that does make a bit of a difference). The Dogtra has 127 levels and the Educator has 100 (I have never used either past the 20s and most often under 10...I can start feeling them myself around 13-15). That does not mean that the Dogtra is any more powerful, it just has a slightly more subtle increase between levels overall. While the Educator has more customization available in terms of how you want the buttons used (which button does what and how they function), the way I have mine set up is exactly how the Dogtra comes standard. This cannot be changed on the Dogtra, but I don't see any reason to do so. A couple of things it is missing if they are important to you: The Educator has a light function on the receiver to help if your dog is out in low light situations which the Dogtra does not have. You also have the option to choose between tone or vibration if you are not using the e-stim. Dogtra is only vibration. My Educator-400 has a 3/4 mile range (the mini Educator is 1/2 mile). Dogtra 280c is 1/2 mile. Honestly, I cannot see my dog ever being that far away from me for this to make a difference. Both receivers are almost identical in size and weight. The shape of the remote is totally different, so that is up to personal preference. Dogtra certainly wins out on styling. Overall- You cannot go wrong with this unit. Despite the couple of features I am missing from my Educator, the straight forward use of this product is great as well as the slightly better handler experience with the remote leave it really up to personal preference. It is important to really do your research in the use of any of these products so they can be used as intended in a positive manner. Tom Davis has a bunch of good resources as well as additional tutorials that come with the unit. If you are new to this type of training, you can't go wrong with this model. If you already have another brand, hopefully this helps for comparison. Happy training! ... show more

Size: 1 Dog - 1/2 Mile Style: Boost and Lock - Tom Davis 280C
I think this E collar is a great learning device for any dog especially ones with smart, but stubborn dogs, such as a German Shepherd. I have a six month year-old German Shepherd, who at times is extremely intelligent and other times a rock. I think that I myself need a little bit more understanding and training on the collar itself. My dog seems to respond well to it at times but when he’s at his most stubbornness is where it can be challenging. Overall great device I myself just need a little bit more training on it👍🏻 ... show more

  • Life got so much better
Size: 2 Dog - 1/2 Mile Style: Compact Receiver - 282C
I had bought a cheap dog collar and it was a complete failure where dog 2 would bark and the collar on dog 1 would go off. I decided to try something more serious and found this. This "tool" is primarily for teaching hunting dogs to retrieve but we used it to try and get our pair of shelties to not bark so excessively (and a little bit of obedience like "come" better). We have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and the 5 year old was teaching the 2 year old what to bark at. They would bark at anything with motor in it. Lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, drills anything. Aluminum foil, getting in and out of the car, when we go swimming. They were out of control and neighbors were starting to complain and they were kicked out of doggy play dates. There was an almost immediate improvement within about 2 days. We started off with the 280C (Single) and quickly realized we needed to upgrade to the dual. You have to remember this is a training tool to teach them to obey your VERBEL commands. I really like the way the manual explains things and you can think of it as a tug on a leash, not so much as a punishment. Think of your dogs as having ADD and you need to get their attention with a tug (or a stronger tug). In fact if our dogs when on leash they were fine. So you can think of this tool as extending their freedom rather than something negative. Always start with a verbel command, if that fails try the "Page" (vibrate), if that fails try a "Nic" (short zap), if that fails "Continuous" (long zap). The point of this progression is to train them to think there is a consequence if they don't listen. Don't go straight to Nic (unless you already gave them a verbal and page). It's an easy trap to just go to the higher levels in panic. But they won't learn if your not consistent. What's also nice is that I realized an automatic collar will never work or be fair. Every situation is a judgement call. And the goal isn't to teach them to never bark. We are teaching them to not bark at stupid stuff. If they are playing and having a "conversation" we let them bark. But if they bark because I opened the door on the car that's not acceptable especially if I told them not to. One super important thing is how tight to make the collar. Our dogs have thick fluffy fur. DON'T compensate with a higher level if it's making poor contact. If it's making good contact it does not take much. If you don't make good contact and turn it up, it will make intermittent contact and zap them harder than you should (this has happened and will happen until you sort things out). Currently 80% of the time page does the job, 15% Nic and 5% continuos is needed. We find it needs to be uncomfortably "snug" to work reliably. It does not seem to bother them if it's snug. But it works a ton better when it's snug. I do hope we can ween them off this collar. Currently they behave a LOT better as soon as it's on. And they don't seem that upset about it and sit right down when it's time to put it on. It's kind of like putting on a leash to go walking. We try to take it off as much as possible because it is heavy and needs to be snug. If we had to use the collars forever, we will, but we hope not to. Friends and neighbors immediately noticed a huge difference and they are better with the collar off as well. But how long would that last if we never put the collar on again? We don't know. One thing I don't like is the dial to turn it up. This can get bumped up or down. Check it before Nic or Continuous every time. I zapped myself to know what I was giving them. It's kind of like a static shock from a switch plate. It's not going to hurt them. We run it between 20-28. Usually leave it on 20 Nic to be safe. We frequent a lake and pool and it has gotten very wet many times. But if they are going to swim, we try to take it off and not "submerge" it (even though it probably has) It is clearly VERY high quality. It works more consistent when they are wet :) We didn't realize how bad it was and what we were putting with and all the yelling and barking until we got it more under control with this tool. I will try to follow up on this review. We've had it like 2.5 weeks. Wish us luck. ... show more
