  • A great way to get started in the search for your roots and learn more about your health
There are a number of options available when it comes to DNA testing for genealogical purposes, and I think I've about done them all now. There are several advantages to this one... First, the sample collection process is easier than most. (Trying to fill a test tube with spit is the pits!) With this kit, you simply swab the inside of your cheek. It's easy, painless, and suitable for those who might be unable to do the spit process. (I was able to collect a sample from my dad just a few weeks before he passed and have learned so much since then. It was a real blessing to have this option!) Second, once the results are back, you can download them and then upload them to other genealogy sites with the notable exception of the big one that starts with "A". (While many of the other companies will allow you to do the same, and "A" does allow you to share results from their test with other sites, "A" does not let you upload test results from any other company. If you want to see matches on their site, you need to do their test.) Third, and this is maybe the best part, you can add additional tests later without sending in a new sample. These tests can be expensive, so it's great to be able to add them one or two at a time - especially when there's a promotional rate available. It should also be noted that FamilyTreeDNA offers tests that many other companies don't. Y-DNA, for instance, is extremely useful in tracing lineage, and this is one of the very few companies that does it. (They also have the largest database of Y-DNA.) When you get the results - which takes about a month or slightly longer - it won't be long before you start to see your matches. You're also able to join various group research projects and work on your family tree - and they make it pretty easy to contact (by email) people that you've matched with, which is definitely not always the case. As for the health aspect of this test, what it will NOT do for you is tell you how likely you are to develop a specific disease. What it WILL tell you is how to tweak your diet and exercise plans, etc. to achieve achieve your goals - because everyone's body needs a unique care plan based on its genetic composition. (Which is why your friend can drink milkshakes and still lose weight while you gain a pound just looking at a one!) Be aware, though, that this test kit only gets you the initial analysis and a 30-day free membership into the wellness program run by their sister company. You need to pay after that to get ongoing insights. Anyway, I like this kit for the ancestry part of things; it's a hobby of mine. This is the kit I recommend to people who don't intend to spend lots of money on joining "A" as well as to those who've already done the "A" kit and want deeper testing. I think FamilyTreeDNA is the best option for those interested in doing serious DNA-based digging for their roots. ... show more

  • Easy to Use DNA Test
Are you interested in learning more about your ancestry? If so, this kit is easy to use. It comes with clear instructions on how to swab the inside of your cheek and then insert the swab into a vial (anyone who has done an at-home Covid test will be somewhat familiar with this type of process). You do this twice (once for each cheek). You then seal the vials into a provided plastic bag, sign the consent form, and put both into a return envelope to send for processing. It took about three weeks to get results, which are emailed to you. You will get a report of where your ancestors originally came from. The regions are somewhat generalized. For example, there is Central Europe, Scandinavia, Ireland, Italian peninsula, etc. Based on what I know about my genealogy, the results seem accurate. The results also allow you to connect with other members of your family who have taken similar tests. This DNA test is easy to use and provides some interesting information. I definitely recommend it if you are interested in learning more about your family history. ... show more

  • Test arrived in a timely manner.
It felt like it took awhile for results. Results came in 2 stages. The test had you sign up for the app right away, but app is not usable til the second part of results are logged.

  • Disappointing. Very Antiquated.
Purchased their paternal test a few years back and was very disappointed with everything about this company. No only was the kit more expensive than ancestry and 23 and me but the website was extremely antiquated with lots of scientific jargon that I could not understand. The site is not user friendly and matches are bizarre and non senciscal. My heritage is Latino from the carribbean and they matched me with someone from the Czech Republic. To make matters worse they have the nerve advertise an upgrade with more genetic markers. What a load of crap. Stay away from this company ... show more

  • Found my previously unknown paternal grandfather
I never heard of this company before and so I didn't expect anything to come of it but it actually identified my paternal grandfather (my dad never knew who his biological father was). When you have a match, it gives you a relation range so given the range and additional information such as the person's birth date from their family tree, I was able to identify the person as my paternal grandfather. From the time I mailed out my swab and got back my results was exactly 3 weeks so I felt it was pretty quick and it was an easy process. You do need an additional app for the fitness data and I found that information to be pretty useless (it told me, based on my DNA, to consume less calories and work out if I want to lose weight). But the family finder is actually really great and the whole process of doing the swab, mailing it out, and setting up your account is very simple. ... show more

  • Lots of information!
This is a simple swabbing. Shipping is included. Test results come back within a month. It’s interesting to see. My Genealogy was slightly different than I expected. My health/fitness was fun to see as well. I do wish there was a way to print off the stuff to have so I could see it without my phone. Obviously screen shots work, but not really efficiently. There is so much DNA information provided. They do a lot of work to break it down, but I feel like I need to know more about DNA to really fully understand my information. Overall I’m glad I did this. ... show more

  • Basic, not as intriguing
I got into genealogy when my grandfather showed me the family tree information that he was compiling over 2 decades ago. I found the information with this kit is pretty basic. Nowhere near as intriguing as my grandfather's stuff or what I have found through ancestry. I never used 23andMe so can't compare to that. With that being said, the kit is easy to use. A swab for each cheek. Just be sure to not eat or drink anything whatsoever the hour before. Best bet is to do it first thing when getting up. My results took 18 days, so not completely horrible. ... show more
