  • UPDATED THOROUGH REVIEW OF MEDIUM COOL BROWN, 5C
Color: 5C Medium Cool Brown Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
Skip to 2nd paragraph if you want to review of the product. My edit/update is mostly about the allergic experience that I attributed to the salon semi-permanent color. On application and while "marinating", my head itched. After a few sessions with the salon color, the itching was CONSTANT. I blamed it on the salon color, and kept using my new favorite shampoo, conditioner, etc. It took awhile before I realized that it was the OLAPLEX PRODUCT LINE THAT WAS CAUSING THE REACTION. By the time I realized it, I had lost a lot of hair! I'm just spreading the word about that product line. There's a lawsuit, and they are refunding customers' money, but that's small consolation when your hair is ruined. This review is for the Medium Cool Brown, 5C. First: In my youth, I had very dark brown hair with coppery highlights in the sun. My hairdresser says that my hair is now 30-40% gray. (It's not really gray; it's white.) For several years, I've gone to the salon every 4 weeks. After 2 weeks, I'd touch up with Clairol Permanent Root Touch-Up, 4A Dark Ash Brown. It worked fine, but I hated the obvious new growth of white hair. So, about 6 months ago, my stylist and I decided to switch to a semi-permanent color, both in the salon and for my 2-week touch-ups. (The semi-permanent products I tried at home were Clairol Root Touch-Up Semi-Permanent Hair Color for Gray Coverage, 2A, Rich Dark Brown. The other was Clairol Permanent Root Touch-Up, 4A, Dark Ash Brown. The biggest difference between the two products is the application method. You can look at the product pages to see what I mean. Neither one lasted very long; my hair looked dull and washed out within a week.) Every time I got the salon dye job, my head itched for a couple of days. (I didn't have the same problem with the at-home touch-ups.) But last month, my head, neck and shoulders itched HORRIBLY for almost 2 weeks. Took a lot of Benadryl and swore off the semi-permanent salon procedure. (As mentioned in 1st paragraph, all this was caused by the Olaplex products I had been using.) NOW, FOR THIS PRODUCT REVIEW: I did a skin test 48 hours before coloring my hair. (I never bothered doing this before, but the allergic reaction to the salon stuff made me wary.) I mixed a tiny bit of the color and developer, and used a Q-tip to put a dot on my inner arm. Unlike other at-home dyes I've used, this stuff mixed up white/translucent. Don't worry. It turns color quickly. (Oops. Then I covered it with a band-aid because I'd made a dark brown splotch on my arm!) Buy a box of latex gloves! The gloves that come with these products are horrible, and for this particular product, I used 3 pairs. The 1st pair was for the initial root application. (The directions say to wait 20 min. from when you *begin* to apply the product.) The 2nd pair was for the next step, when I applied the color to comb through my shoulder-length hair. That step may not be necessary for future dye jobs, but this was a new color, and it claimed to have 3 different shades, so I wanted to apply all over. The 3rd pair of gloves was for rinsing and washing out the dye. The total time was 25 min., though in the past I've waited longer for better coverage. For the sake of research, I wanted to follow the instructions exactly. I used the conditioner that is supplied in the box. In theory, this MEDIUM cool brown is lighter than the touch-up products I've used in the past, both permanent and semi-permanent, all by Clairol. If we ever have a sunny day, I'll find out if the color is significantly different from the various "dark brown" dyes. For now, right after doing my hair, it looks really good. When I update this review, I'll let you know if the supposed 3-color highlights/lowlights thing is noticeable. Definitely an improvement over the semi-permanent products. I'll let you know what happens to the towels after a few washes. (I try not to wash every day, just condition, but it's summer and if I bike or swim, I have to shampoo.) MORE UPDATE: I am gradually moving to lighter shades of the same color. To go gradually lighter, change from 4 to 5 to 6 of the same color. Instead of using the touch-up versions, I'm just using the full boxes of dye. The range of colors is greater, and the difference in price is negligible. Eventually, the color will show up completely on the white hair that is growing in, and the still-not-gray will look fine. So the new growth of white hair is less noticeable than the demarcation line when I was using the darkest cool brown shades. ... show more

  • Exactly what i wanted
Color: 7R Lighest Auburn Size: 6.26 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This hair dye helped me get the strawberry blonde color I was going for! I used the 7R Lightest Auburn color and was slightly worried it would be too bright, since the color looks a bit intense on the model on the box. But it turned out great! The instructions said to start the timer as soon as you start applying the dye, not after you've finished applying it to all your hair. I started the timer at the beginning as instructed, first applying the dye at the darker roots and then working my way out through the ends of my hair. I had almost all of it saturated after about 8 minutes. I continued to work the dye through my hair for another 10 minutes to make sure that I didn't miss any sections, then wrapped my head in a clean plastic bag for the remainder of the dye time. The instructions said to dye for 25 minutes, but I ended up dying my hair for 30 minutes from start to wash, just to make sure everything was dyed. It didn't stain my scalp at all, and I didn't notice any color runoff in my shower or on my shower mat. I'm very pleased with the results. My natural hair is a light brown color and this dye turned it into a realistic looking strawberry blonde. ... show more

  • Covered my Bleach Blonde Hair with no Significant Ash
Color: 6W Light Mocha Brown Hair Color Size: 6.26 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I bleach my hair at home, and while I loved doing so for the past 2ish years, I'm focusing more on hair health over color at this point. I've tried other box dyes, and, for the most part, it's a two-box process: a fill color (since bleached hair has no bonding color, without this step it would be muddy and green), and the color I actually want. I chose red this time around, so I bought brown for my fill and red to go on top. As I am writing this, I'm considering returning the red. I put the brown dye in the blonde parts of my hair (I let my brown roots grow out pretty long), and omg.... omg...... it looks so great! It matches my roots perfectly, my hair is soft, and I'm not having a major allergic reaction. I'm so incredibly happy with this! ... show more

  • Dagnabbit This Stuff Fades Faster Than It Used To - They Made Me Decide To Go Gray
Color: 8R Medium Reddish Blonde Size: 6.26 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
First, let me explain my headline or title of this review. I'm doing my best not to use any foul language here, so Dagnabbit is as good as it's going to get. Anyone who has fake red hair or is a hair stylist knows, red is the fastest color to fade. Yes, I realize that Clairol while it's been around for a long time, it's not a salon quality hair dye and I'm not expecting salon quality out of it. I've used many different brands in my life and I've had gray roots I needed to be rid of for a long time now, so I would consider myself an expert in this situation, as a consumer of this product and other home hair dyes as well as many years of going to a salon to get my hair done. Like most things seem to do these days, prices go up, yet the quality and/or quantity goes down and that's the experience I have with the quality of this product. Yes, my red used to fade, but it would last longer than it does these days. I'd say the fading starts quite quickly, at about two weeks on, you can see the fade as your once beautiful red shiny hair becomes dull and a flat looking color. You can't keep putting this dye over the old growth every 4-6 weeks when you cover your gray roots because it will damage your hair terribly, so this is an issue with the fading, because when you dye your roots, they are nice and red and shiny, but the rest of your hair is dull looking, so your roots are still obvious, but they are obvious in being redder rather than grayer than the rest of your hair. In fact, Clairol has made me decide to go gray all the way. I am currently giving my hair a rest from the dye and although it's in the phase that makes me look like I'm just too lazy to color my roots, I'm sick and tired of having to redo my hair so often and causing damage to it from over dyeing it due to the quick fading. I wanted to give this review to let those of you who are still dyeing their hair to know this dye fades fast and I am no longer someone who is outside all the time and can use the excuse that the sun faded it, I'm inside most of the time these days so its a problem with the dye itself. ... show more
