A truly revolutionary product with ground breaking technology, SkyProdigy is the product of a culmination of decades of telescope advancements. It combines electronic motors, an intelligent on-board computer, a digital camera and StarSense technology to create an automatic, instant alignment telescope that requires no input from the user. Simply turn it on, push a button and enjoy the view! It's that easy. The SkyProdigy's automatic alignment process takes only a few minutes, then you will be ready to select from thousands of objects to view. Not sure what to look at? Select the Sky Tour option; this feature offers a customized list of the best objects in the sky to view for your exact time and location anywhere in the world! No knowledge of the night sky is required. One touch innovation turns anyone into an instant astronomer! Celestron's SkyProdigy telescopes use an integrated imaging camera and patented StarSense Technology to automatically align with the night sky and determine where the telescope is currently pointing. The camera automatically captures an image of the sky, which is processed internally to positively identify the stars in the image. Once a positive match is found, SkyProdigy determines the coordinates of the center of the captured image. The process is automatically repeated two more times so that the system has three known alignment points that can be used to make an accurate model of the night sky. From this information the user can select any celestial object in the hand controller's database, and SkyProdigy will automatically move itself to the correct position. The SkyProdigy's internal camera does not have an external output allowing users to view or save the captured images. The captured images are used internally solely for the purpose of self-aligning the SkyProdigy telescope.SpecsOptical Design: Reflector Weight: 18 lbs (8.16 kg) Aperture: 130 mm (5.12 in) Focal Length: 650 mm (25.59 in) Focal Ratio: 5 Finderscope: StarPointer Mount: Motorized Altazimuth Eyepiece 1: 25 mm (0.98 in) Magnification 1: 26 x Eyepiece 2: 9 mm (0.35 in) Magnification 2: 72 x Accessory Tray: No Tool, Quick release Tripod: Steel CD ROM: The SkyX First Light Edition astronomy software Highest Useful Magnification: 307 x Limiting Stellar Magnitude: 13.1 Resolution (Rayleigh): 1.07 arcsec Resolution (Dawes): 0.89 arcsec Photographic Resolution: 400 line/mm Light Gathering Power: 345 x Angular Field of View: 1.9 ° Linear Field of View (@1000 yds): 103 ft (31.39 m) Optical Coatings: Aluminum with SiO2 overcoat Secondary Mirror Obstruction: 1.7 in (43.18 mm) Secondary Mirror Obstruction by Area: 11 % Secondary Mirror Obstruction by Diameter: 33.2 % Computer Hand Control: Fully Computerized / Flash Upgradeable Slew Speeds: Nine slew speeds: 3°/sec, 2°/sec, 1°/sec, .5°/sec, 32x, 16x, 8x, 4x, 2x Tracking Rates: Sidereal, Solar and Lunar Tracking Modes: Alt-Az Alignment Procedures: StarSense Automatic Alignment, Solar System Align 2-year Telescope WarrantyCELESTRON TWO YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY A. • Get A Quality Case For This Too
Style: 5.1" Reflector Set: Telescope Only
I've been an amateur astronomer for years and years. I use to own an 8-inch but frankly, it was too gigantic to use more than just occasionally. This thing is well-built and simple to put together in the field. Something you should know: I purchased the Pelican 1730 case too. Why? The Pelican 1730 case was wonderful when it came to holding the scope, tripod and other necessary components. That case also has "two man lift" handles on it. Talk about putting a well built scope into a well built case. Just make sure you get the case with the foam, so you can organize the contents anyway you want. To get a sample image from me, just let me know - and I will try to get back to you with a photo of how I arranged my case. Your results could vary of course. But my way of plucking the foam worked great for me. One note: some people opt to "go cheap" and just use the original box to haul the scope around in. In my personal opinion that's a big mistake. But to each his own. The original box is great to ship stuff in to your home. But cramming your extra eyepieces and other accessories into a box like this is kind of silly if you ask me. Besides - that cardboard box isn't the most durable thing ever made. Did Celestron make a wonderful product? Absolutely! But if you're going to invest in a nice scope like this, seriously consider getting a good case for it too. ... show more

  • Brand new to astronomy and this was an excellent choice for a beginner scope
Style: 5.1" Reflector Set: Telescope Only
Brand new to astronomy and this was an excellent choice for a beginner scope. Fed-Ex dropped the box out the other door of the delivery truck, so it was a tiny bit out of collimation when I started. It worked exactly as it said it would in the directions, fired it up, waited to push align...align 2 minutes later pushed Jupiter under planets tab and there it was, not quite centered but there it was. Saturn...WOW! I ended up having to drive to the observatory at SunRiver Oregon for help with first collimation, ordered a collimation (non laser) tool, watched a few web videos and was able to easily collimate it by myself from then on. Tricks learned to pass on to fledgling astronomers: if things aren't quite centered, use the starsense calibration menu, find a bright star of planet, center it in your eyepiece, I start with 35mm then drop to about 8mm, center, then follow instructions. re-align. Magic. I found the folks at Celestron to be very helpful and pleasant when I utilized the chat window in support. Many questions answered. Ive found this little beauty easily tracks planets to get pictures with Stopmotion 1080p hacked webcam (mod was easy). Now that I firmly have the bug, next will be 8 inch...I have aperture fever now. Seriously, the problems with this telescope have been very few, I have little trouble recommending Celestron. The pictures below were captured end of this last July, yellowish one was on the valley floor with smoke and dust in atmosphere, bluish was 4000 feet up with clear mostly dark skies, using webcam, 2x CelestronXL Barlow. All in all, this telescope truly surpassed my expectations. The eyepieces in the Celestron kit, aren't bad, but i bought midrange Celestron XL eyepieces and it did improve visuals. I just love this little bugger! ... show more

  • Great scope for inexperienced and/or impatient
Style: 5.1" Reflector Set: Telescope Only
This scope is a riot!! I love it, my kids love it! You can see Jupiter's moons, the bands around jupiter, Saturn's rings, stars about 15-20 arc-seconds apart. The detail you get when looking at the moon is mesmerizing! Looking at far away galaxies is possible, but not as ensnaring. And it shows you the sky. You align it so easily (be sure to read the instructions, it needs a niece big chunk of clear sky to the right. After the first night out, spend a little time to calibrate the camera. It is easy to do and improves the precision tremendously. Every time you take the tube off and put it back on, it shifts ever so slightly, and then you will have to recalibrate the camera. Battery lasts for ever. Lots of scopes gets complaints about battery running flat in no time. Not this baby. It runs on 8 D-size guns. I have it out every night for hours and I'm still on my first set of batteries! The reason I give it 4 stars are the demonstration value only eyepieces that comes with it. If they had bundled their lovely zoom eyepiece this would have been a home run, 5-stars, no holds barred review. So if you get this (or any other Celestron scope), do yourself a favor and order the zoom eyepiece: Celestron 93230 8 to 24mm 1.25 Zoom Eyepiece Happy stargazing! ... show more

  • Nice telescope, unreliable StarSense mount.
Style: 5.1" Reflector Set: Telescope Only
I purchased the Skypodigy 130 mainly for the kids to peak their interest in astronomy early. The kids and I do love it, the telescope itself is nice. The issue is with the StarSense mount. We have only tried using it a few times and we could never get it to auto align. At first I thought it might be because there were too many buildings in the subdivision we were in. I then tried it in a field and still couldn't auto align it. (Manual Align did work). Then the third or forth time I tried it the starsense mount would not power on. I made sure I had correct power (12.37V) and sufficient Amperage but it will not power on. I have contacted customer support who did contact me after a few days, and did send me a shipping label, but I was told there would be a 6-8 week delay in getting it fixed. I was told by customer support that they were very busy, with a lot of repairs and that is a normal turn around time. That alone caused me the most concern. 6-8 weeks is a VERY long time for an RMA and a customer service rep making excuses up front without any comment from me was even more concerning. My confidence has not been bolstered by today's experience. From Customer Support: "Please expect a 6-week turnaround from the date received. Also, keep in mind that Celestron deals with large numbers of repairs on a weekly basis and repair status cannot be checked since products are serviced in the order received. " ... show more
