While the weather was too cold for us to open our hive and test these out, the products that came with this package seem reliable. I have used the brand of paint pens they package in here, and can confirm the colors that they disperse are bold and easy to see. That doesn't mean your girls wont just clean the dot off of Her Highness though, especially if it's a normal pollen color The clips are sturdy enough to stay closed, but easy enough to open with one hand The plunger moves smoothly, which means there shouldn't be any accidental squishing I look forward to testing these out on a Drone when spring comes ... show more

Note: I did not use this product on bees I used it for my baby chicks. It went on easily and stayed on for awhile. I did not want to use any plastic rings since they are hard to get off and the chicks grow so fast. The colors help me figure out the problem ones and it help me keep a better eye on them. Also the colors help me figure out which ones I want to keep. ... show more

I have seen similar queen marking kits on other bee supply stores for higher prices. This one does have queen clips that it comes with, plus the queen marking bottles. Make sure that you shake up the markers first and try them on a bit of paper to make sure they are working first. Then practice on a drone before you try to mark the queen. I don't use the bottles myself, I hold her gently and dab on the color. It's great that the kit gives you all five colors, but again, make sure they work first. Put the caps on tightly when you finish so maybe these will last several years. We don't have that many hives, but we do catch a lot of swarms, and I think it will be a lot better if we mark the queens so it's easier to tell if a hive has swarmed or she has been replaced. We didn't used to mark our queens but I am changing my mind and this kit has everything we need in it. ... show more

I like this queen marking kit. It supplies you with two queen-holding plungers, and three nice queen catchers. It does the job, but it's not the highest quality that can be found. The materials are slightly on the cheap side. First, one of the foam plungers fits a little loosely in the tube. Also, the thick mesh where the marking takes place is kind of coming out from under the lid - it's secure, but has kind of an unfinished look... Then, when it comes to the pen (I chose green to test since 2024 will be a green year), the paint takes a long time to dry. It being too cold to try it on an actual queen, I tried it on my fingernail. I took a shower a few hours later and the paint washed right off. It made me wonder if nurse bees would be able to clean the paint off easily. It's hard to say, but I'd guess not because I think a queen's thoracic exoskeleton will absorb the paint better, and the paint would adhere to the queen's thorax better than my fingernail... ... show more

    • Great little queen marking set with everything you need
I like that you have several colors to choose from so you can be clear on what year your queens arrived. The pens are good quality acrylic pens and mark well. The other parts of the kit are good as well. Queen catchers is nice to have a couple of. The little making tubes work well also.

My husband and I have been beekeepers going 4 years now. This kit is average for what we have seen. The queen clips are nice and standard. The queen marking cage seems pretty cheap and flimsy. The description states "Our Queen bee marking kit includes POSCA Medium Tip Markers from Japan" but the markers are not POSCA brand and are made in China. Overall, this will work as a kit for marking a Queen bee, but it's not a great kit. ... show more
