This is the fist time buying marble mortar sete, I thought these must be finished or polished inside. I did some research and when these are new, they will be rough inside. Be advice, this mortar is incredibly rough on the interior of the bowl. The end of the pestle is the same- very coarse. After doing some research, you have to crush salt or dry rice to make it smooth inside that after this process, you have to throw away anything you grind with it because it will contain the little marble particles. repeat this process until you feel comfortable, rinse and use as you like. as some other review said... The exterior of the mortar is beautiful- polished stone. Same with the handle of the pestle. The wood base fits perfectly onto the bottom of the mortar, making for a very nice looking set. enjoy!! ... show more

MY HUSBAND WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS PIECE. IT WAS WELL PACKED AND LOOKED BEAUTIFUL COMING OUT OF THE PACKAGE!! THE BASE RENDERS A BROWN COLOR WITH A SUBTLE ENGRAVING THAT YOU ALMOST DON'T NOTICE. THE BASE WAS WELL SECURED TO THE BOTTOM BUT A THUMB NAIL WILL POP IT RIGHT OFF (MY HUSBAND'S THUMB NAIL). IT HAS QUITE THE APPEAL ON OUR KITCHEN COUNTER THAT I DON'T WANT TO PUT IT UP IN A CUPBOARD. ... show more

This seems like a nice mortal and pestle. Of course it's very heavy as it's made of granite. What I don't like, and the reason for a 1 star deduction, is the wood base. It looks really cheap! And every time I go to pick it up to move it I drop the wooden base off of the bottom. I think I'm going to end up just putting something on the bottom of the granite to keep it from scratching my counter. That's all the base is for anyway, and I don't think it ads to the function or look of this. ... show more

I have a feeding tube and need a grind my pills every 4-6 hours, I’ve had to do this for 10 years and my wrist is weak from doing this for years so I tried this mortar and pestle and it works better than anything I’ve used before, I would recommend it for this reason…..the pills are so well crushed

Downright gorgeous granite mortar and pestle. I have a tiny one I use for crushing up pills, but wanted a bigger one for spices and other foods. So far, this thing has been awesome. Weighing a hair under 7lbs, not only is it gorgeous sitting on the counter, it’s a work horse: thanks to the etching/grooves in the granite, spices grind up much easier than in a mortar with a smooth surface. Having said that though cleaning it out after each use does require a stiff bristled brush to thoroughly scrub out the grooves. The pestle itself is quite comfortable to hold on to. Finally, thanks to the wood base, rotating the mortar as you’re grinding/mixing is easy and prevents damage the counter tops. A few tips before first use: you will want to prep the mortar by grinding some rock salt or dry rice in it. Doing so will loosen up any granite particles left over from the etching/production that you don’t want to end up in your food. I used rice in mine and did a couple rounds of grinding in it before I was satisfied it was ready for food use. Overall have no complaints about this MarcZero mortar pestle. Superb quality for the price so highly recommend it if you’re in the market for one. ... show more
